How to make a comb from wood. DIY comb. How to make your own wooden comb

A short master class on how to create a comb for dolls from various available materials. Give a second life to trash!

With each new article, the site turns into a blog about creativity and handmade. What can you do if I’m more interested in writing about my hobby than about the world around me.

Now my project is to create a small wall-mounted roombox. This will be a woman's dressing table with a mirror. There was a need to fill it with various accessories, without which the desired atmosphere of a girl’s corner would not be achieved.

I can't imagine a woman who doesn't have a comb on her dressing table. Therefore, the first thing I thought about was: “How to make a comb for a miniature with your own hands?”

I decided to make a soft wooden or, as it is also called, a massage hair brush.

As usual, I chose an object to follow. Having examined it carefully, I realized that it consists of only three parts: a wooden base, soft material for pads and teeth or pins.

Therefore, for work we needed following materials: ice cream stick, piece thick fabric, or better yet, thin leather, fishing line or old Toothbrush, glue moment, candle, sandpaper and knife for artwork. There are, of course, special knives for working with wood, but in the absence of one, we work with what we have.

I will tell you the course of my actions in order.

Master class: miniature comb

1 I made markings for the future comb on an ice cream stick. I outlined with a gel pen, but it would have been better to use a simple pencil. It can be easily wiped off with an eraser, and it doesn’t stain your hands.

2 I used a knife to cut out the base for the comb. First I used a knife and then sandpaper to round the edges.

3 I cut out an oval pillow from fabric. But during the process I realized that leather would be more suitable for these purposes. If you hold it over the candles, the edges will bend and you will get the shape we need in the form of a shallow cup.

4 I threaded the fishing line into a needle and “stitched” our pad so that it turned out to be about thirty cloves. The length was left at least 15 mm on each side. I think you could use toothbrush bristles instead of fishing line, but fishing line is easier and faster.

5 Now it was necessary to secure the pins with inside. To do this, I brought the fishing line to the candle and held it for several seconds, about 5 cm from the flame. Fishing line from high temperature melted and curled into balls, thereby fixing itself in the cup.

6 I marked a place for the pillow. It would be possible to immediately glue the pad to wooden base, but then the edges of the skin would be visible. To avoid this, I made a small indentation with a knife. This is where a wood carving knife would come in handy.

Making a high-quality comb with your own hands is not as difficult as it seems at first glance. Step by step process its manufacture from natural materials given in a step-by-step master class.

Materials

To work you will need:

  • pieces of wood;
  • lathe or hand tools for wood processing;
  • pencil;
  • paper;
  • ruler;
  • compass;
  • hot glue;
  • plastic tube;
  • awl;
  • hard stubble;
  • thin bamboo sticks;
  • scissors;
  • sandpaper;
  • wood glue;
  • perforated patch;
  • wax, stain or varnish.

Step 1. First, sketch out on paper the approximate parameters of the comb, the shape of the handle and other details. You can see the list of ready-made parts in the photo. Give the part that will fit in your hand a comfortable ergonomic shape. A round wooden stick will be needed to connect all parts of the comb together. Two round plugs and some kind of wooden washers will hold the cylinder with bristles. The diameter of the washers must be smaller than the plugs and must match internal diameter plastic cylinder.

In one of round blanks, outer side Be sure to adjust it to the shape of the handle. This is needed for quality connection details.

Be sure to sand all workpieces and, if desired, treat them with wax, oil or wood varnish.

Step 2. Now take a plastic cylinder and cover it with a perforated patch or printout with similar marks.

Step 3. Using an awl or Dremel machine, make holes at the marked points. They should all be the same size. When finished, remove the paper or tape and, if necessary, sand the surface of the cylinder.

Step 4. In this case, the comb will consist of natural bristles and bamboo sticks, which will be arranged alternately in rows.

First, start preparing the bristles. To do this, take the hard bristles of any animal, in this case it was a boar. Carefully sort the bristles and cut them to the same length. Please note that they will fold in half and partially go inside the cylinder. Divide the bristles into equal tufts.

Cut bamboo sticks of suitable diameter to the length of the bristles. Be sure to polish the sticks. Make sure they are smooth and don't snag your hair.

Step 5. Using an awl, insert the bristles. Place bamboo sticks in the rows adjacent to them. At the end of the work, secure all parts with drops of hot glue. Let the workpiece dry thoroughly and make sure that all parts are securely fastened.

The properties of a hair comb depend not only on the shape, but also on the material. Different types material - different properties. You won’t confuse white and brown bread, right? They can also be the same shape - but they will be completely different. It's the same here.

In this article, we will look at what materials modern hairdressing combs are made from, what are their advantages and disadvantages - and which one is better to prefer in what circumstances.

What materials are hair combs made from?

  • The tree is the childhood of humanity, which is still in use.
  • Metal is the next stage of evolution.
  • Plastic is the next one.
  • Carbon fiber is the last stage for now.

And now - more details about each.

Combs made of natural materials - wood. Advantages and disadvantages

Before the advent of carbon combs, this natural material was considered the most gentle for hair. A properly processed wooden comb is much safer for your hair than, for example, metal.

However, it was combs made of wood that lost ground long ago. Massage brushes - yes, please, but wooden combs for professional use are almost never done. Why? Because how do you shape wood into the shape of a modern shading comb? Firstly, it will be expensive - there is so much to cut out of a piece of wood. Secondly, the strength of thin teeth will differ little from the strength of a toothpick. Who needs it?

So at Mustang we use wood in massage brushes, where its gentle qualities come in handy - and we make working combs from other materials:

Metal combs. Advantages and disadvantages

Metal combs treat hair in an evil way. There may be microscopic nicks on a metal edge - and each of these nicks cuts hair like a saw tooth. These nicks may appear due to insufficient processing - it would not be so bad, to process it well and that’s all. But they can also appear during storage and use. Dropped metal comb- and she begins to take revenge on you, cutting your hair so that it begins to split. From this high-quality processing will not insure.

But, again, metal remains as a working material in massage brushes. Only each metal clove should have a plastic ball on top - this way it will not damage the scalp. And the clove itself, naturally, has no edges, cylindrical. This makes the metal safe for hair.

Why use it at all? The fact is that metal is much stronger than wood and plastic - so the teeth can be much thinner, and nothing will happen to them. And if you need a massage brush with thin teeth, then it will, of course, be a metal brush:

Combs made of plastic. Advantages and disadvantages

They are deprived of the disadvantages of metal and wood - but also deprived of their advantages. Not as dangerous to hair as metal, but not as gentle as wood. Because plastic also receives microdamage, which can also cause harm to hair - but not as severely as metal nicks.

Plain plastic collects static electricity and electrifies the hair. This is a problem - and it's not even a matter of electricity snapping your fingers. It wouldn't have been so bad - but it clicked and clicked, funny.

  • But electrified hair becomes frizzy - it is unruly. This is one hair repelling another, if anything - like the identical poles of two magnets. Divide this effect by the fact that the hair is thin and does not push back much - but multiply it by the number of hairs on the head. What will happen? The result will be chaos.
  • And electrified hair collects dust. They attract small particles that surround you - like different poles of two magnets. And small particles are, in general, dirt. Therefore, hair becomes dull and dirty faster, so you have to wash it more often and dry it more often - and this destroys it.

The situation is solved, for example, by the Soft Touch coating - it does not electrify like that. But they cannot cover the working surfaces of the main combs - they must be smooth. Fortunately, now there is another option - simply change the material of the comb.

Carbon fiber combs. Pros and... pros

Perhaps in a hundred years this material will be replaced by some new leader. Some nanoclay or something like that. But now carbon fiber is the leader among materials for combs.

  • It is durable - so the combs are durable.
  • Therefore, microdamages that destroy hair do not appear on them.
  • Carbon fiber does not electrify hair.
  • And, by the way, does not enter into unpredictable chemical reactions, like metal - therefore can be used in a painting or perm environment.

So we make all the main working Mustang combs from carbon fiber. We make an exception only for tails - they come in both carbon and metal. Why? This is a topic for.

Combing a woman's hair is considered an almost ritualistic act. Our distant ancestors made hair combs from wood, believing that this simple accessory helps restore strength and protects the entire female half of the family from the evil eye. In our world artificial materials, buying combs made from natural materials is much more difficult than buying combs made from plastic or metal. But those girls who tried to use it on their hair wooden comb, they will no longer exchange it for anything else.

Pros of wooden combs

The main advantage of scallops is natural wood is its environmental friendliness. When in contact with hair and scalp, such an accessory will not emit harmful chemical compounds, but, on the contrary, with the help of healing essential oils, helps improve general condition curls.

In addition, a wooden comb will not electrify your hair. Daily brushing will make them smoother and shinier. In addition, oak or juniper products will help cope with such an annoying problem as split ends.

If you have already asked yourself a question, do not rush to go searching, perhaps you yourself, or someone from your environment, will be able to cut it out. We will tell you how to do this below.

How to make your own wooden comb

In this section we will try to tell you step by step how to make a comb from wood with your own hands. The manufacturing process will require your time and attention, but they are always valued higher than mass-produced items in a store.

So, for work we will need:

  • Wood block rectangular shape. The sizes depend on what kind of comb you want. We will take small model 8 by 10 cm, the thickness of the board should not be less than 6 mm;
  • Circular saw and grinder;
  • Sandpaper of different grain sizes;
  • Burning machine (if you want to decorate the product with a design);
  • Linseed oil

Combs are best made from hardwood, such as beech or juniper, but will also work well. fruit trees– cherry, plum, peach. Often craftsmen make it from birch.

We take our piece of wood and sand it on both sides. On the resulting blank, draw the shape of the ridge with a pencil, and then cut it along the contour with a circular saw. If you don’t have such a saw at hand, you can take regular jigsaw for wood.

Now you need to divide the comb lengthwise into two parts. On the lower part we will cut teeth for combing. Typically, the width of one tooth is from 2 to 3 mm, and the distance between them is about 1.5 mm. We also do this using circular saw.

The next step is to sharpen the plane of the comb towards the end of the teeth. We sand the entire product to grinding wheel, at the same time we sharpen the teeth. To ensure that the comb is perfectly smooth, we polish it manually with sandpaper.

Now it's your turn decorative decoration ridge Can be burned on flat surface a floral ornament, or the name of the one who will soon become its owner. You can leave the product without burning; the texture of the wood itself is unique and delightful.

The final touch is impregnation of the finished comb linseed oil. Heat the oil to a low temperature (it should not burn your fingers, as very hot oil can warp the wood), lower the comb there and leave until it is saturated. Then the product needs to be dried at room temperature. This usually takes from 1 to 2 days.

Here is the finished wooden hair comb. self made! We hope that our tips on how to carve a comb from wood will be useful to you, and you will delight your beloved women with a stunning gift that will be appreciated!

1) Using a hacksaw or circular saw, cut out an 8 by 10 cm shape from a plank.

2) Afterwards the surface is polished. We use a polished wheel.

3) It is required to draw the geometry of the blank for the ridge.

4) Then cut along the contour using a saw.

5) The teeth are cut out on a comb using a circular comb with a blade width of 1.5, and the width of the teeth is left at 2.5 mm. You can also use another value.

6) When the teeth are cut, it is necessary to sharpen the plane of the comb at the edge.

7) Now you need to grind the teeth (sharpen) using a special nozzle and clean the grooves.

8) Afterwards the final look is created using sandpaper– zero.

Useful tips for making wood combs regarding sanding

  1. If you need to attach the skin to the surface, this can be done using simple silicate glue (stationery glue). Polymer adhesives soften when heated and rebound.
  2. If the skin is round, it is better to place it on a piece of vacuum rubber, in the center of which there is a metal axis. When installing the nozzle, press the washers on both sides. The skin is removed when the washers are relaxed.
  3. When initially making combs from wood, you can use a board from packing boxes - this will help you make good versions of combs and learn how to do more serious things.
  4. Don't be afraid to experiment with shape, size, etc. personal experience we will not replace.
