Functions of an office cabinet

A cabinet serves many functions as office furniture. It can be a storage for documents, a continuation or extension of the desktop, contain a system unit or some peripherals for computers, or serve as a stand for some equipment.

All office cabinets are equipped with locks to prevent third parties from gaining access to stored materials or documentation. It is also possible to equip cabinets for offices with a “Central locking” system, which allows you to close all drawers with one lock.

The workplace of a modern clerk, along with a traditional table and an armchair (chair), is equipped with a long-term storage documents, stationery, personal belongings of an office worker. As a rule, these furniture elements are characterized by a small height, and their standard location is directly under or near the table.

The classification of office cabinets includes the following main types:

Built-in cabinets that come with office desks classic shape;
floor (additional) cabinets, supplied as separate element furniture, includes modifications with or without legs;
roll-out (mobile) bedside tables, which are equipped with wheels or casters, making it easy to move them from place to place as needed.

Modern office fashion trends do not involve the use of office desks equipped with built-in bedside tables: this outdated format is giving way to more functional designs that allow them to be relatively easily rearranged. However, massive cabinets as part of presentable wooden tables are still a good option for equipping an executive office. Here such furniture looks quite appropriate, forming an appropriate image of the manager himself and the company as a whole.

Side cabinets, equipped with three or four drawers, are usually installed directly next to office desk, thereby increasing its usable area. Wide floor cabinets, equipped with hinged doors or sliding doors, are sometimes installed near tables, but more often along the wall of the room. Another purpose of stationary side tables is perfect place for installing office supplies and equipment (printers, MFPs, TVs, folders with documents, pallets with office paper, flowerpots, etc.).

A roll-out bedside table is a bright representative of the new generation of office furniture, characterized by high mobility, which is quite relevant in the light of current trends, when the need to change the configuration of office space arises quite often. However, today not only bedside tables are equipped with rollers/wheels, but also other office furniture, from armchairs to desks and even cabinets.

When equipping an office with bedside tables, it is important to consider not only the possibility of easy movement of the furniture, but also its height, which should be sufficient to be placed under the desktop.

A typical office cabinet includes 3-4 drawers of the same size, which are used to store almost any small items and things. There are also two-section bedside tables, with regular and high drawers, as well as bedside tables with drawers and a niche. Bedside tables can be produced without a lock, with a lock only for the top drawer (most often) and with a central lock (one turn of the key can close all three drawers)

The cabinet is intended for use in medical and treatment rooms, laboratories and other rooms where storage space is required Supplies or the placement of laboratory or medical instruments and equipment. It can also be used in administrative premises as a cabinet for office equipment. Can also be used as nightstand in medical wards.

Proper organization of the workplace is one of the fundamental factors efficient work. The constant lack of space associated with a large amount of equipment, papers and office supplies causes a constant loss of time searching for what you need. One of best methods increasing the working surface is the use of attached office cabinets.

Types of side tables

The most common variation is rolling cabinets. They may be stationary or mobile, but the meaning remains the same. The cabinet is placed in a row with the table, becoming its visual continuation.

There are a number of features:

  • The cabinet should be level with the desk. Height variation will not only disrupt visual harmony, but will also interfere with work;
  • Unified style. A match in color and stylistic design is considered ideal;
  • Functionality. Considered optimal harmonious combination shelves with drawers. This approach to the storage system allows you to place the maximum number of things inside;
  • Installing a cabinet with a drawer or section for office equipment in this way is extremely welcome.

A more complex option are models that require fastening to a table. Most often, this need arises when installing a table in a corner space. The entire structure will resemble the letter G. Option 2:

  • Adapter. For this purpose between top bars desk and the cabinet, a figured fragment of the table top is placed. He is the one who goes into the corner. The remaining furniture elements will be located along the adjacent walls. Such a segment can simply be an adapter, or it can be equipped with lifts and a special lower stop. Even if you disconnect the cabinet, the adapter section will be a functional usable area of a lifting nature;
  • Overlapping. In the corner segment, part of the cabinet body acts as a support for the table. It, in turn, has an elongated tabletop, which is attached above the cabinet using low stops (a small gap is obtained). It can rest directly on the body of the cabinet. In this case there will be no gap.

Among the features of these structures it is worth noting:

  • Reduced mobility. Moving such a table to another place is much more difficult;
  • Original appearance. This variation is quite capable of reviving boring interior office;
  • The cabinet is larger in area. At the same time, access to the far part of the frame is extremely difficult. An increase in size usually does not affect capacity. People don't tend to crawl under desk tops on a regular basis;
  • All furniture is a single unit with the same design. You don't have to select anything.

Features and purpose of side tables

Despite the fact that the direct purpose of using this furniture is to organize the office space, no one can forbid you to install it at home. If you need a workplace at home, then this approach will make it as comfortable as possible. The cabinet allows you to remove all unnecessary office supplies, papers, and folders from the table. You can also store spare consumables for equipment in it (cartridges, refill inks, printing paper and the like). Specially selected side tables will allow you to place equipment on them as well.

Manufacturing materials and coatings

The main selection criterion that affects the durability of furniture is the body material:

  • Wood. Durable and beautiful material, which is the basis for expensive furniture High Quality. Many types of wood (especially conifers) during operation release special beneficial volatile compounds into the air - phytoncides. They have a beneficial effect on human immunity. This will come in handy in a dusty, stuffy office. The material requires care. Pre-impregnation with antiseptics is required. This way you will not encounter fungi, mold, putrefactive processes and wood borers. Surface polishing and multi-layer varnishing are also desirable;
  • MDF. These are slabs with a very dense structure. They are made on a wood base with small fractions. Qualitative, reliable material, capable of withstanding high loads. Inferior natural wood in a little, but the price tag is noticeably cheaper. They are equipped with a protective outer layer that can withstand short contact with water. But, it is better to avoid this factor;
  • Lacquered boards (LMDF, LDSP). Fully retain all the properties of the base material. Varnishing increases the resistance of the boards to humidity and heat. In principle, there is no noticeable difference in price with MDF, and the performance characteristics are an order of magnitude higher;
  • Chipboard, fibreboard. These slabs are based on pressed sawdust or shavings. This makes the structure quite loose. This feature affects the strength of the material. The slabs can withstand basic loads placed on furniture, but do not transfer harmful factors. You will have to completely eliminate contact with water and heat. All this will lead to rapid damage to the furniture. The parts will begin to crumble, crack and swell at the cuts and joints. But, many are tempted by the material due to its availability and economical prices.

To extend the life of furniture, you can use special protective coatings:

  • Varnishing. It will add additional gloss or help change the color of furniture. At the same time, it has the ability to repel water. The top layer needs to be renewed at least once a year. During use, it becomes covered with scratches, negating the protective functions;
  • Painting. Another inexpensive way to protect cheap furniture from damage. Choose your enamel carefully. Varieties for external use may be toxic to humans. Painting is done in several layers with drying of each;
  • Lamination. On the surface of the base plate under high pressure a thin film of laminate is attached. It is very durable, not afraid mechanical damage. When in contact with moisture, it remains neutral, repelling it;
  • Polymerization. Instead of laminate it is applied the thinnest layer durable polymer. The properties are approximately the same. In office settings, the method is rarely used. If only it has something to do with high level air humidity.

Equipment

The choice of a facade opening system is quite traditional for cabinets:

  • Swing. The door is attached to the body at the side using furniture movable hinges. If necessary, pull it outwards towards you. In this case, the sash will require a significant amount of space. Don't pull it by force. Jerks and pressures lead to breakage of fasteners;
  • Folding. The method is used less frequently. The hinges are moved down the sash. In this case, side folding holders with position locks are added. The door opens downwards until the locking device clicks;
  • Retractable. Drawer design system. Miniature rollers with external side guides are used. Very sensitive to changes in height. They immediately begin to get stuck in the grooves. Take up a lot of space in open form. The drawer cannot be pulled out completely without deforming the rollers.

It is better if the cabinet combines drawers and shelves with a straight bottom. This allows you to organize storage most efficiently. In principle, you can put whatever you see fit inside. But, items should not get dirty. Liquids are stored in an upright position to avoid leakage.
