Staircase racks can be made from beams or boards. The crossbars are made of timber. You can use cuttings from unnecessary ones for them garden tools. The workpieces are cut into fragments of suitable length, carefully cleaned and polished. When working, you can refer to the following drawing: Fig. 2. It is recommended to install the crossbars with special glue. To do this, you must first prepare holes in the racks for the ends of the crossbars. The holes must be located exactly opposite each other. After the bed is completely ready with your own hands, it is recommended to further strengthen its structure with the help of strapping. It is best made from boards. At the same time, they will serve as a fence. To prevent the possibility of injury and splinters, you need to carefully polish all parts of a homemade bunk bed made of wood so that its surface becomes perfectly smooth. Finally, the bed is painted or varnished. The finished bed is installed in the chosen location, must be attached to the wall using self-tapping screws, and only after that can it be used for its intended purpose.

This method is very convenient if you once bought a sofa for one child, and after a while a second one appeared, who also needs somewhere to sleep. In order not to make a bed with your own hands from scratch, you can adapt an existing sofa for this. The second tier should have the same length as the first. The width of the top tier should be slightly smaller. Usually it is 70-80 cm. Thanks to this difference, the finished bunk bed will not look too bulky. First you will need to prepare 2 wooden shields. Their width should be 2 cm greater than the width of the mattress used. Height – 2 cm more than the height of the mattress. Attach these panels to the sides of the mattress using bolts with a diameter of 10 mm. Prepare a fencing strip 50x30 mm. The plank will be attached using metal corners and screws. You will need to attach 2 corner pieces to the bottom edge of the mattress edge. Secure them so that the free shelves face down. Take the block and attach it to the wall with bolts. The block must have the same cross-section as the fencing strip. Pre-prepare recesses in it for the shelves of the corners.

Attach the posts to the top mattress with bolts and place it in place. At the bottom, the racks are attached with bolts to the sides of the sofa. The upper back side of the mattress should be supported by a block. The shelves of the corners should fit into the grooves of the bar. This will ensure the strength of the mattress. Racks are best made from solid hardwood. If the mattress cannot be securely attached to the wall, the same racks will need to be made at the back. Attach the stand to the wall with at least one bolt. Finishing the bed is exactly the same as in the previously described instructions. Happy work!

The question of how to make a bunk bed with your own hands often appears on the “agenda” due to the fact that standard apartments are not distinguished by impressive areas and spaciousness. Even if the children in the family are completely allocated separate room, don't clutter it extra furniture– it is better to leave more free space for games and sports activities.

Therefore, for a family in which two or more children are growing up, a bunk bed design becomes a real godsend. And it’s not at all necessary to rummage through online catalogs or run around furniture stores– this one can be made on your own.

Some types and models of bunk beds

Nowadays, in the assortment of stores you can find many models of beds with two tiers, and on their basis it is quite possible to create your own version of a sleeping place with dimensions and a comfortable staircase suitable for specific conditions and specific location. In addition to traditional bunk structures, you can also make a loft bed, which will free up useful space in the room.

If we consider several various options, it will be easier to choose the most suitable design for your apartment.

Traditional model

This type of bunk bed is traditional and has the simplest design possible. It is quite accessible to self-made and will demand minimum quantity materials.

This model is perfect for a children's room and will significantly save useful space in it, which can be used to arrange a workplace or play area. In addition, the structure can serve as a good platform for intricate children's games, so it should be quite stable, and in some cases it is recommended to firmly fix it to the wall.

The big advantage of this model is the natural wood from which it is made, which is very important for a child’s room. Drawings and a detailed description of the manufacture of this bed model will be discussed below.

Bed option with sofa

A bed with on its first tier folding sofa, will save even more free space in the room than a conventional two-tier design. If the ground floor is arranged regular bed, it will be uncomfortable to just sit and watch TV, since there is no comfortable backrest. Therefore, in addition to the traditional version of a bunk bed presented above, in a children’s room you will still have to look for a place for a sofa or two armchairs, which, of course, will take up enough large area. Well, if a sofa is built into a two-tier complex, it will serve as a sleeping place at night, and during the daytime it will create a comfortable corner for relaxing while sitting or lying down. In addition, when folded, this piece of furniture will not take up a single extra centimeter of space, and when unfolded, it will become a spacious, full-fledged bed.

Transformable bed

To make such a complex yourself, you will have to buy or use an existing one and attach the rest of the structure to it, which, by the way, will be stable and reliable due to the massiveness of the lower tier.

Bed model with drawers

This version of a bunk bed, designed for three sleeping places and additionally equipped with drawers and shelves, will take up slightly more space than a regular traditional bed with two tiers. However, in a children's room you still cannot do without various cabinets and drawers for toys and educational supplies, for which an attached structure can be used, which at the same time serves as a reliable, stable one leading to the second tier.

The sleeping places themselves will take up an area that would accommodate one regular bed. As can be seen in the illustration, the third berth is retractable design, which hides under the mattress of the first tier during the day.

Thus, three children will be provided not only with sleeping places, but also with their own drawers and shelves, and in addition - an excellent play complex into which such a two-tier structure can turn.

Model with a double bed on the first tier

A bed with a double bed on the first tier can be used in one-room apartment, or in a two-room apartment, where it was decided to allocate one of the living spaces as a living room with a workplace. So, the first floor of the bed is reserved for adult bedroom, and the second is intended for a child.

This version of the trapezoidal design will take up the area of the room, which is usually reserved for an unfolded sofa. To make it, you will need few materials, but due to the widely spaced legs and the large massiveness of the lower tier, the bed will be stable and durable.

Bed for a large family

A bunk structure consisting of four beds is an excellent choice for a family with four or more children. This option is more difficult to make, and it will require a lot of material, but the room will become spacious, and the bed will look neat along one of the walls.

The design can be modified and even increased to six sleeping places if it is installed the length of the room and another two-tier section is added, or two pull-out mattresses are installed under the lower tier.

Loft bed

A loft bed is also used for the purpose of rational use of usable space in the room and a kind of “camouflage” of the sleeping area. This option will do not only for small children - it is often chosen for adults, especially if the apartment consists of one room.

This design allows one area of the room to be used for dual purposes - on the second tier there is a wide and comfortable bed, and the lower platform of the first tier is a fairly spacious office, which provides everything for comfortable work.

An important condition for arranging such a structure is its strength, especially if the sleeping place is intended for two people. Typically, such a loft bed is additionally securely fixed to the wall.

Children's loft bed

The children's version of the loft bed is a whole complex that includes a table and a wardrobe in which not only toys, but also items of clothing can be stored. With some justification, such a complex can even be called a small room, which will become a favorite place for a child, since most children always try to create their own “secret” corner, building huts and houses from chairs and blankets.

By making this version of a bed with all the elements necessary for play and study, you can solve several problems at once and save on buying pieces of furniture for a child for many years, since the complex is suitable for both a five-year-old child and a fifteen-year-old teenager. Moreover, when starting to draw up a drawing, it is quite possible to include already existing cabinets and tables in it, which are perfect for the first tier of the structure.

Upon completion of the work, all elements of the loft bed are united in a common color that will be in harmony with the design of the entire children's room.

Making beds with two tiers

Further in the publication we will consider the manufacture and assembly of two different models bunk beds - “classic” type and loft beds. However, many structural elements and their assembly principles are exactly the same, and in order not to repeat ourselves, first of all these nuances will be shown separately, using the example of an ordinary wooden bed. If these principles are mastered, then creating a second tier will no longer be difficult, of course, taking into account certain features.

Principles of high-quality assembly of a wooden bed

In order for the product to turn out neat, it is necessary to perfectly accurately manufacture and process all the details. The instruction table below shows illustrations in which the master uses professional tools– they make the work much faster and easier. However, the same operations can be carried out with an ordinary tool, which is available in almost any good, “handy” owner. Of course, you will have to put in a little more effort, and manufacturing will take longer, but it is still possible.

	So, all boards must be planed, their surfaces must be perfectly leveled and adjusted to the required size. This illustration shows the manufacture of the drawer - the side panel of the supporting structure of the bed.
	To ensure that the transverse boards on which the mattress will be laid have reliable and durable supports, well-processed bars are attached to the drawers.
	Carpenter's glue is applied to the drawer panel along the gluing line of the timber. Then the glued element is placed on it. The timber is pressed well and tightened with clamps in several places. After the glue has dried, the parts are fastened with self-tapping screws through countersunk holes.
	Very important point is the manufacture of side stands-legs, since they bear a high load. In the future, the side and end panels of the bed will be attached to these elements. Therefore, they are usually assembled from two layers, one of which is the main one, and consists of a whole timber. The second layer is assembled from individual elements located at a certain distance from each other.
	This distance depends on the width of the drawer, the edge of which will be installed in the resulting groove. Separate pieces of timber are first glued along the markings onto a solid part, and then countersunk holes are drilled into them for self-tapping screws.
	Another point that causes difficulties is the creation of patterned forms on some parts, for example, when making semicircular backs of the headboard and footboard. In order to avoid mistakes and not draw unnecessary rough lines on the actual wooden part, it is recommended to make a paper template from which the form is transferred to the board with neat dashed outlines.
	Then, take a flexible plastic strip, which can be bent along the bend of the cut, and the finishing curved boundary of the cut is drawn along it.
	Next, the board is cut along the marked line using an electric jigsaw. This photo shows a professional stationary machine, but it is quite possible to use a hand tool.
	After this, the cut line is processed with a manual or stationary router, which will round the edges and rid them of protruding wooden fibers. In the same way, all the boards necessary to create the elements for the headboard and footboard are cut and processed.
	When all the parts necessary for assembling the bed have been made, you should try them on and make the necessary markings.
	Next, connecting dowels are manufactured or purchased ready-made. They can be round or flat, as shown in this illustration.
	The finished dowels are laid out on the parts to be connected. At the same time, it will be possible to visually estimate how many of them will be needed.
	In the places where holes will be drilled for installing dowels, with a simple pencil marks are made. It is easier to drill holes for round dowels by selecting a drill the right size. If flat dowels are used for connections, then several holes are drilled nearby with a drill, which are then combined with a chisel or cutter.
	The dowels are inserted into the holes without glue for now, since it is first necessary to pre-assemble the structure to ensure that there are no distortions.
	After this, the bed posts are put on the free ends of the dowels. To completely seat the parts during assembly, a rubber or wooden hammer(mallet).
	Having made the connections of the parts of one of the sides of the backrest, proceed to mounting the second rack.
	Having collected individual elements beds, it is necessary to pre-assemble the entire structure of the “ground floor” to make sure that all the parts fit together exactly.
	Base boards are laid on the bed frame - this process is carried out to determine optimal distance between them.
	When the size of the gaps between the boards is determined, fragments of the block are cut along it and glued between the boards onto the support beam on which the base boards are laid. These elements will allow the boards to be in a given position without shifting, so they are simply laid without securing the edges with screws.
	After all the preliminary operations have been carried out and any necessary adjustments have been made, the entire structure is disassembled and reassembled, but “tightly”, that is, using glue.
	The illustration clearly shows how the bed posts are connected to the headboard panels using dowels coated with glue.
	The glued bed frame must be tightened with clamps until it dries completely, and then it is additionally fastened with self-tapping screws through countersunk holes.
	The illustration clearly shows the pieces of timber attached to the longitudinal support shelf of the drawer - between them the base boards under the mattress will subsequently be laid.
	The final connection of the drawer and the backs of the headboard and footboard is made with self-tapping screws.

So, having made all the parts that are needed according to the specific drawing of the selected model, you can proceed to self-creation this original piece of furniture, using the shown principles of assembling the main parts and assemblies of wood.

This option for a bunk bed can be called the simplest of all existing ones, which is why it is worth considering.

	This drawing shows the details of the stairs and the railing of the upper berth. The staircase post indicates the location of the three steps. When attaching the lower step to the footboard post, you need to make sure that the fastening screws of the step do not rest against the frame fastening screws.
	Now, for the comfort of further work, you need to fasten the headboard and footboard with the lower and upper drawers. To do this, they are installed in the gaps left between the linings, and each of their sides is secured with four self-tapping screws.
	When the structure is firmly on the floor, you can begin installing the staircase handrail, its steps, and the railing bars. The elements are fastened to each other, as well as to the headboard and footboard posts, with self-tapping screws. After all the elements have been assembled into a single structure, you can lay transverse boards between the sections of bars fixed to the frames.
	The last step will be to finalize the joints so that there is no burr left on them. Then all that remains is to clean the structure from dust, install it in the right place, place mattresses on the sleeping places - and the bed is ready for use.

I would like to add that it would be a good idea to secure the assembled structure to the wall, since children usually use it not only as a sleeping place, but also as a sports complex. To avoid unpleasant moments, it is better to ensure in advance that the structure is stable and safe.

Loft bed

Another bed option that will help save space in small apartment, even with only one room. As already mentioned, the space occupied by such a bed can be usefully used for various needs.

The diagram below gives a complete idea of what the finished bed will look like. In addition, it is possible to determine own sizes design, since the bed may be larger or smaller than the option shown in the drawing, depending on the height and age of the child, as well as the size of the room.

Such a design can easily be modified into a more compact version; a side platform is not installed, but a staircase is installed instead, which will take up much less space.

The instruction table below will show the order of work and the dimensions that must be observed during assembly.

	Based on the presented drawing, the left end part of the structure is assembled from prepared boards. The crossbars are also connected to the posts using dowels, which are placed in the drilled holes using wood glue, and then additionally fixed with self-tapping screws - their caps must be deepened into the wood by 2÷3 mm. A platform with stairs will be attached to this side.
	Next, the right end side of the structure is assembled in the same way. It differs significantly from the previous one, since it serves as one of the sides of the fence.
	The next step is to glue onto the supporting boards of the frame (tsars) and then screw them with self-tapping screws into the bars with delimiting board sections 30 mm long, between which the transverse slats will be laid under the mattress. Next, the end parts of the structure are connected with drawers and enclosing boards. All parts are assembled using bolts or dowels and screws. If dowels are used, they must be placed on glue. As a result, the internal area of the bed should be 1000x1900 mm in size. After this, lamella boards are laid on the protruding beam - the basis of the berth.
	The next step is to assemble the support frame-rack for the podium platform. It must be durable, since it will bear quite a large load.
	The next operation is to install the platform frame to the frame, and the entire structure is attached to the bed. To fasten all the elements of the podium, it is recommended to use metal corners that are screwed onto the inside of the frame. Here you need to take into account that the structure must be strong enough to support the weight of an adult.
	Next, the podium area is covered with prepared boards. It is best to place them on glue, and then screw them in with self-tapping screws, recessing their caps into the wood by 3-4 mm, and seal the remaining recesses with a mixture of sawdust and glue. All edges of the boards must be carefully processed until smooth, so that the possibility of suffering one or another injury is eliminated.
	The next step is making the stairs, and it can be called the most difficult of the entire process of building a bed. The boards must not only be perfectly processed, but also their edges must be cut at an angle of 45 degrees, but at the same time the top is cut on one side, and the bottom on both sides. To make it easier to mark the places where the bars are secured under the steps, one board can be placed on the podium in a position in which the staircase will be attached to it. The steps should be parallel to the floor - this can be marked using a regular building level. Having marked one of the boards, mark the second one in exactly the same way, with complete symmetry. The marking points will set the direction for drawing lines along which uncut bars are screwed to the boards. Their edges can be trimmed after fastening - exactly at the level of the end part of the board.
	Next, step boards are laid and secured onto the fixed bars. To make it easier to work, first fix one board at the top and bottom - this will give the structure the necessary rigidity. After this it will be easy to screw on the remaining steps. All fasteners must be recessed into the wood, and the holes must be sealed with a mixture of glue and sawdust. The finished staircase must be securely secured to the podium and the structure can then be carefully tested. After this, all holes, sealed with putty made from glue and sawdust, are sanded with sandpaper. The next step is to paint or coat the entire assembled structure, if desired, with a water-based varnish. To make it easy to apply varnish or paint on surfaces, without being strongly absorbed into the wood, it is advisable to first coat all parts with a wood primer, which will create a film, filling the pores of the material.

This publication presented the most simple designs bunk beds that can be made even by a beginner. If you don't have everyone at hand necessary tools for wood processing, or there is not enough confidence that the process of precise processing of workpieces will go flawlessly, you can entrust this work to professionals by contacting a carpentry workshop, providing the purchased material and drawings with dimensions.
