Homemade bunk bed. Children's bunk bed made of wood - design and assembly instructions. How to assemble a bunk bed and prepare it for use

High quality and original furniture not only emphasizes the uniqueness of the home, but also allows you to diversify your life.

You can make a bunk bed from several types of material: the fairly popular chipboard, timber and edged boards, furniture panels, as well as solid wood.

A wooden bunk bed can be made quite quickly with your own hands, but you will have to put a lot of effort into it due to a number of features.

Selection of materials before the work process

There are a number of materials from which a do-it-yourself bunk bed can be made, but in reality only a few are used:

  1. Chipboard, among others, is particularly popular due to its low price and the possibility of extremely fast production. At skillful work There will be no problems with a jigsaw, but you cannot make an internal drawing, because... closing it requires complex equipment, which is installed only in factories. The downside is the color scheme (it is impossible to create a high-quality imitation), as well as small emissions chemical substances into the air in places not covered by the edging.
  2. Edged boards and timber are also very popular, but increasingly as load-bearing elements, while they are rarely used as main ones. Working with them is quite difficult, besides, it can be quite difficult to evaluate the material without prior experience, and only an experienced person can distinguish 17% humidity from 30%. In the presence of lathe timber is gaining particular popularity because You can form a very interesting support structure.
  3. Furniture board is the most expensive among all, and it cannot be found in every city in the world. To make a bunk bed with your own hands, this material fits perfectly, and the strength and environmental friendliness are almost equivalent to solid wood. It lends itself to processing quite well, and it is possible to form a pattern even without through holes, which is highly valued among wood cutting enthusiasts.
  4. The array is used extremely rarely, because prices are almost always astronomical, although you can get it everywhere. The convenience of this approach lies in the minimum number of parts, as well as their complete homogeneity. Working with the material is quite complex (you need to properly dry it, select it and process it), so it is better not to start working without good prior experience.

The fittings used are standard, but it is advisable to use galvanized steel instead of aluminum, which often does not look as impressive, but is much more reliable, and this is especially important for upper tier.

Preparation and main activities

Tools and materials:

  • roulette;
  • edged board;
  • beam;
  • bar;
  • jigsaw;
  • protective composition;
  • flat brush;
  • screwdriver;
  • steel furniture corners;
  • furniture screws.

At the very beginning, you need to prepare a drawing of the future workflow. It is advisable to use a minimum number of parts in the drawing; moreover, it is often simplified during work, because Not all elements can be turned. The dimensions of the bed may vary depending on the physical characteristics of the vacationer, i.e. with a height of 190 cm, there is no point in making a bed shorter than 210, whereas with a height of 160 cm, 180 would be optimal.

In this case, we will consider the most inconvenient option - working with edged boards and timber, because, having learned from the complex, it will be much easier to move on to the simple. First you need to make a complete cut of the elements that will later be used:

  • timber 60*60 mm – 4 pcs. 1800 mm each;
  • edged board 25*150 mm – 6 pcs. 1900 mm each, 12 pcs. 750 mm each and 2 pcs. 1550 mm each;
  • block 25*80 mm – 2 pcs. 1800 mm each and 6 pcs. 300 mm each.

After which they should be sanded as thoroughly as possible. sandpaper. Especially close attention is given to the places where the cuts are made so that there are no burrs left on them, and after finishing sanding you need to use a damp sponge (not wet) to collect all the dust from the wood, but not to wet it too much.

Then, without fail, all elements are covered protective layer against moisture and insects. Drying usually takes up to 12 hours, after which you can begin working again.

Now we have to assemble many sawn elements into 1 general design DIY bunk bed:

  1. At a height of 30 cm from the bottom of the beams, a perimeter is formed from edged boards.
  2. Another perimeter is formed mirror-like from above.
  3. The footboards and headboards are covered with 2 short boards.
  4. The upper tier along the perimeter is covered with boards, and only the platform for the stairs needs to be left.
  5. A staircase is formed.

In order to organize the joint between the board and the beam, you will need a furniture steel corner, 2 screws for each joint. Exactly this design will ensure maximum reliability of the entire system during operation, regardless of the weight of the vacationer.

If desired, you can use long-length furniture screws, but for them you initially need to drill holes of small diameter, after which you can finally tighten them. Installation with self-tapping screws is more reliable, but the joints will be visible (it is better to use 2 options in a pair so that the quality is extremely high).

Important aspects at work

Tools and materials for further work:

  • PVA and sawdust;
  • furniture plugs;
  • stain and varnish;
  • flat brush;
  • rubber heels;
  • hammer and bead nails.

After you have made a bunk bed with your own hands, you need to make sleeping places in it. To do this, you will need 8 cuts of a 25*40 mm bar along the entire internal length on 2 levels - these will be the drawers.

To fix them, ordinary screws are used, but you still need to drill holes so as not to split the wood. The fastening pitch is only 25 cm with mandatory joints at the corners.

Mattress pads are formed on them from edged boards. To do this, the board is cut to the entire internal width of the bed and fixed in increments of 10-13 cm. If the increment is reduced, then the bed will be too hard, and if increased, the mattress will fall into the cracks. All fixing is done using screws with a flat head, and the head must be inserted into the board (a groove is cut with a chisel). Otherwise, the mattress may be damaged, which is strictly prohibited.

All screws visible to the eye must be covered with special furniture plugs, allowing the metal to merge with the wood. If you want to achieve a better result, you can mix PVA with sawdust (you will get an improvised putty) and carefully tighten the metal with this mixture. In any of the 2 options the result will be quite good, but upon closer inspection you can still see the screws.

And now the bed is completely ready, but you can’t rest on it yet. Now you need to cover it with stain and varnish, and then allow it to dry completely in a ventilated area for 36 hours. You should not rely on the fact that 4-5 hours after varnishing you can no longer feel anything with your fingers, because... harmful chemical compounds will be released into the surrounding atmosphere for a very long time.

Before use, rubber heels are nailed to the legs using glazing bead nails, which will help level out uneven floors. Instead of rubber, you can use plastic analogues, but they will not provide such softness.

Summarizing

Regardless of which drawing was chosen for the work, and then the materials, the entire process must be carried out with the utmost care. Because the bed is subjected to stable high loads, you need to choose extremely reliable materials that will last a long time.

If suddenly something goes wrong while doing the work, you can always stop for a while, and then, after adapting the part to another place, cut off the excess.

Even if at the end there are a lot of unclaimed cuts left, you shouldn’t get rid of them all, because... long ones may still be useful in the future for new ideas.

Saving living space is acute in small apartments. A good solution is a wooden bunk bed.

It saves the necessary space and gives the room comfort. If we supplement it drawers, functionality will increase many times. A well-made bed will last children until they grow up. After this, you can save it for your grandchildren or sell it at a profit. There is always a demand for such furniture.

Constructions

Most choose the classic version of a wooden bed, when the lying places are located one above the other and connected by a ladder.

For children

A bunk bed allows you to accommodate two children in one room. Thanks to it, there is enough space for games and activities.

Practical model options:

  • corner - sleeping places are located to each other at an angle of 90 degrees;
  • attic type - designed for one child who can sleep upstairs and study at the desk downstairs;
  • retractable tier - the lower bed extends, increasing the area;
  • staircase made of boxes– the floors are connected by steps that extend and serve as drawers for storing small items.

Whatever wooden furniture you choose, it is important to take care of safety. It is better that the bunk bed is placed against the wall, and all sides of the top have a secure fence. If a child under 3 years old sleeps on the lower floor, a fence will also not hurt. Children often turn over in their sleep, so partitions will protect them from falls. When the baby grows up, the fence from the bottom can be removed.

For adults

The difference between the adult model and the children's model is only in size. For children, a length of 160–170 cm is suitable; for older people, it is better to make a bed 190–200 cm. The width depends on the preferences of the individual and free space. In order not to spend money on an additional mattress order custom sizes, it is better to choose the standard option – 70–90 cm.

Usually a do-it-yourself bunk bed is made from chipboard for country house with limited living space. It allows you to accommodate overnight guests. In one-room apartments there will be such furniture ideal solution if the family has added a child. He will be able to sleep on the top tier, and his parents on the bottom. In this case, the first floor should be designed for two.

It will also save space attic option from timber. Downstairs you can arrange a full workplace and sleep under the ceiling. If the housewife does not like people to sit on her bed, and the area of the apartment allows for either a sofa or a bed, you can install a two-tier model. Top part will be a bed, and the lower one is made in the form of an ordinary sofa.

The stores have quite wide choose classic models, but they are not always suitable for a particular apartment. If you make a wooden bed yourself, you can solve several problems at once.

Materials for manufacturing

To create a bunk bed, you need to select the material. No need to search solid array. Yes, it makes excellent models that last a very long time, but they require special skills. The solid wood must be very good, only durable types of wood are suitable, they are usually expensive.

The following materials are used as a basis:

  • Chipboard or laminated chipboard is used only for some parts of the bed, such as backs, drawers, panels. You need to choose only safe slabs of class E1 or E0.5;
  • edged or planed board. The material must be selected with special care. Damp wood can lead, it will change shape, warp;
  • MDF. MDF is considered a modern analogue of boards. The boards are available in raw and laminated form. The edges of the finished bed are treated with a special tape;
  • furniture panel. Pieces of wood are glued together into a single board. A person with carpentry skills should work with it.

The process of creating a bed requires tools that are used when working with wood and metal. You will also need measuring instruments, pencil.

Bed ladders

Making a two-level bed also involves a ladder. In the classic version, the usual three-stage design is sufficient, but this is not necessary. It all depends on the chosen model. There are those where the ladder is replaced by ropes. The option with a slide looks very interesting, but you should not do it if the free space of the apartment does not allow it.

Ladders can be mounted vertically. They fit tightly to the frame and do not take up space. There are also inclined options, which are easier to climb. Ladder fastenings must be closed.

Consists of classic staircase from steps and railings. It is these that the child will be able to hold on to while climbing to the top tier.

Create a drawing

In order to know how much material, fasteners, and accessories will be used, you need to decide on the model of the bed. If a person can create a drawing of a children's bunk bed made of wood with his own hands, then it is enough to sketch it on a piece of paper. It can also be done in a special program for PC.

There are a few things to consider. Between the tiers you need to leave such a distance so that an adult can climb onto the lower bed without touching his head on the upper bunk, of course, if the height of the room allows it.

There should be enough distance between the second floor and the ceiling for the child to feel calm. Warm air accumulates at the top, so lack of space can negatively affect healthy, full sleep.

The sleeping area must be designed taking into account standard mattresses. Then you can order them in any store.

Without having the skills to create drawings, you can choose a ready-made diagram.

The principle of assembling a wooden bed

To make a bunk bed that will become a favorite place for children to play and relax, you need to properly prepare the materials and process the details. Furniture makers in factories have access to a variety of equipment that makes the task much easier, but a good owner will also have the right tools.

Preparatory operations:

  • the boards need to be smoothed, leveled, and adjusted to the required size;
  • It is better to fasten parts using several methods at once, including glue and self-tapping screws;
  • the side racks must be very strong, since the main load will be carried on them;
  • if there are curves on the parts, they should first be drawn on a paper template and then transferred to the wood;
  • It is better to cut out with an electric jigsaw;
  • after all the parts are made, they are tried on;
  • The dowels that will hold the structure together require special care.

After the bed is assembled, it is disassembled to be finally connected using glue and screws. If flaws are identified, they are corrected. There is no need to rush into assembly, since the bed must be securely fastened and stable.

Step-by-step production

It is better for an inexperienced craftsman to start by creating a classic bunk bed. First, the base is made, and you need to act strictly according to the scheme. Created rectangular box. To do this, boards are attached to the drawers; the angle should be 90 degrees. Supports in the form of bars are attached to the end parts with self-tapping screws. The crossbars on which the mattress will rest are placed in the created box.

To create the back you will need three boards. They need to be assembled with the racks of the structure using dowels and grooves. It is better that the connection elements are round, since the holes for them can be made with a drill of the appropriate diameter.

Note! Wood glue should be used only after preliminary fitting, when the dowels fit all the holes in the posts and boards.

The footboard is made in the same way as the backrest, the only difference is in the number of crossbars. The base of the second floor will rest on the top of the backrest and headboard, so it is important that they are level.

The upper tier is created according to the model of the lower one. It is secured with dowels. The structure should be reinforced with end boards. You can proceed to installing the stairs. The simplest option is when crossbars are attached to two posts. It is easier to use plywood for drawers. You need to screw special wheels to them that will guide their movement. Drawers are ideal for storing bedding, toys and other things.

If the material has not been pre-treated, the finished bed is covered paint and varnish. It is better to use aqueous solutions, which are safer for health.

Retractable design

For a children's room, a pull-out bed is considered the safest; you can't fall too far from it. Partitions on two-story structures were not invented in vain, but sometimes children get up in their sleep and this can result in serious injury.

Plus pull-out bed is that in daytime The lower part retracts, thereby freeing up space for games. Children will not fight for space as the beds are not connected to each other. They are used separately.

You can make such a bed yourself from chipboard. The base is made of a solid board 18 mm thick. The shield is attached to the sides. The lower tier will slide out using four wheels.

A pull-out bed is a great space saver and is easy to make, but it does not allow you to store bedding in drawers.

Loft bed

Many parents are faced with the problem when the child does not want to sleep on his own. They just haven't yet created a decent shelter for him in the form of an attic bed. The design is so attractive that the child will happily exchange his parents' bed for the opportunity to sleep under the ceiling.

The main value of such a two-tier design is to save space. The bed is made on high posts, so the place to sleep is near the ceiling. Under the sunbed there is a work area with a table and chair. The only thing you should take care of is good artificial lighting, since the bed will provide shade.

It is better to make a side staircase in the form of steps. In a simple design, these can be ordinary wooden crossbars. With some effort, you can make steps in the form of drawers that are comfortable to walk on, sit on, and store a lot of things you need for studying in them.

The height from the floor to the second tier should be at least 120 cm. Although this depends on the person for whom the workplace is being created.

The loft bed can stand not only on stands, but also be attached to the wall or ceiling. The design depends on the selected drawing. If it was created from good wood, it is enough to open it with transparent varnish. A tree pattern always looks great in any room.

You will need to take measurements of the part of the room where the product will be located and determine the size of the structure.

The following data is used in the drawing:

  • Product height;
  • Length;
  • Width;
  • Distance from the upper and lower tier;
  • Length and width of the stairs;
  • The space between stair steps;
  • Height of the upper tier;
  • Width of supporting beams;
  • Locker sizes.

If you are planning lockers, be careful about the spacing to place them.

Photos of finished options will help you clearly determine how to make a drawing correctly.

Materials

When choosing materials, consider your skills and the range of available tools. Chipboard or solid pine are excellent for work. Let's prepare the tools we need for the job.

You can use sheets of plywood for the base under the mattress.

Depending on whether you will cut the material yourself or entrust it to professionals, we select the set of necessary tools. The best option will cut the boards according to measurements using professional tools in a furniture workshop. Then all you have to do is connect all the parts.

We need instruments and devices for measuring and fixing. You can’t do your work without a simple pencil.

For this you will need: a screwdriver, screws, glue, level, drill, hammer, sanding machine for processing finished product, blank material sawn according to measurements.

Making two-tier furniture is not difficult if you prepare everything necessary tools and recall existing construction skills.

Let's get started

So, all preparations are completed, you can start making a bunk bed with your own hands.

Now let's move on to creating the back.

Make the second tier in the same way.

Using self-tapping screws and the method of connecting parts “under the countersunk”, attach the ladder to one of the racks.

If necessary, guards can be secured to the top bunk.

If the design involves the presence of drawers, then the ladder should be attached from the outside to the supporting structure rack . Now attach the drawers to the stairs according to the drawing.

Decoration

It’s worth thinking about decor before production begins, as it can affect the project. Experienced craftsmen can make furniture in the shape of a house, car, or boat. You can attach “branches” instead of stairs, along which “young Mowgli” will climb to the second floor.

An experienced craftsman makes a bed that looks like it came straight from the pages of a fairy tale book.

A common option is to add a Swiss wall, athletic rings or rope. Beds with a slope in the form of a slide have earned great popularity.

You can implement any design depending on the imagination and skill of the master.

If you have built classic model bunk bed, and thought about the design only later, then use any textiles for decoration: pillows, hanging decorations. attach the rope.

There are plenty of options that creative people will find it without difficulty.

A bunk bed will help solve the problem of lack of space due to its compactness.

Preparing to assemble a wooden bed

Before you start assembling the bed with your own hands, you need to draw up a project for the future product and prepare the necessary drawings. There are a number of very important points to consider at this stage. First of all, a do-it-yourself bunk bed should be of such a size that not only Small child, but also a teenager. Children grow very quickly, and this will save you from having to replace furniture every few years.

Figure 1. Drawing showing the dimensions of a bunk bed.

When planning a bed with your own hands, you need to take into account the size of the mattresses. If you buy ready-made mattresses, then start from their sizes. If you plan to make mattresses for a bunk bed with your own hands, then it is best to make traditional-sized beds, i.e. 180x80 cm. The sleeping place is made approximately 2 cm more mattress from each side. While working, you can refer to the following drawing indicating all required sizes: Rice. 1. It is very important to choose correct sizes beds. In this case, it is necessary to take into account where the bunk bed will be installed and how the ladder to the upper tier will be attached. It is best to do the stairs at a slight incline. In this case, about 5 cm should be added to the size of the bed. You need to select optimal height second floor. In this case, it is necessary to take into account the height of the ceiling. If the ceiling is low, then you should not make the second floor too high, because... the child will feel stuffy and uncomfortable there. It is important to choose the optimal distance between tiers. It should be such that if an adult sits on the first tier, he does not reach his head to the upper berth. It is also better not to make the distance too large, because... This will make the bunk bed less stable and safe. The distance between the mattress of the lower tier and the floor should be about 30-40 cm. Wooden bunk bed must be sufficiently rigid and robust construction. Children will not only sleep on it, but also play, tumble, jump, etc. To check the rigidity of the finished structure, it is enough for an adult to sit on it. If the bunk bed does not deform under such weight, then it is quite stable. The second tier must be equipped with a fence. It is advisable to do it on the first tier.

A bunk bed should fit well into the interior. Even before starting work, you need to think about this and decide which side is best to install the stairs to the upper tier. A bunk bed should be as stable as possible. To do this, it is fixed to the wall. In accordance with safety regulations, a bunk bed must be installed at a sufficient distance from windows and opening doors. When designing a bed with your own hands, carefully consider the material for its manufacture. On the market building materials beams, planed boards and other materials will be presented to your attention different sizes. You can choose the most suitable materials and save yourself the hassle of sawing wood. If such a need arises, it is better to trust this work professionals. Order cutting furniture panels according to your patterns. Before purchasing the materials from which your DIY bunk bed will be assembled, take another look at the drawing. All dimensions must be indicated on it. Take this drawing with you when you go shopping for materials.

Preparation of tools and materials

In order to assemble a bed with your own hands, you will need: simple tools, which are found in almost every home, and those that will need to be purchased specifically for making furniture. The list of tools includes the following:

  • building level;
  • pliers;
  • a screwdriver or drill with the appropriate function;
  • squares;
  • roulette;
  • sandpaper;
  • Screwdriver Set;
  • hammer;
  • jigsaw;
  • wooden beam 10x5 cm for supporting posts;
  • timber with a cross section of at least 4x6 cm for frames;
  • metal corners;
  • board 10x2 cm;
  • plywood;
  • furniture panels;
  • varnish or paint of the desired color;
  • vice;
  • chipboard strips;
  • various fasteners (screws, screws, self-tapping screws).

Step-by-step instructions for making bed tiers

Assembling the bed begins with making the frames. In the future, mattresses will be laid on them. Frames must be rectangular shape. When assembling a bed with your own hands, you will need to be careful at every stage. When assembling frames, make sure the sides are perpendicular. Ensure that the beams are connected as securely as possible at the corners.

The most durable is the tongue-and-groove connection. In this case, you need to use special glue.

Such a connection can only be made if a hand-held milling tool is available. If there is no such connection, the connection is secured from the inside with metal corners. The frame is equipped with spacers. If you bought or made a mattress of sufficiently high hardness, install one spacer in the middle. If the mattress is soft and will be placed on plywood sheet, you will need to make at least 4 spacers distributed along the length of the bed frame at the same distance from each other. After the frame is assembled, install sides around its perimeter. They will provide additional support for the mattress. You can make your own bed bumpers from boards or chipboard. This completes the preparation of the place for the mattress.

Housing Assembly Guide

The first step is to make the stands. They will hold on finished design. This can be done in two ways. You can make 2 identical side parts from furniture panels. They must exceed the level of the upper tier by 30-40 cm. In order for the finished homemade design looked more beautiful, the shields could be rounded. In addition to their main function, the sidewalls will act as additional barriers at the ends of the bed. Mark the surface of the boards and prepare holes in them through which the connection will be made to the frames of the sun loungers. Use bolts with round heads to connect. This option has its drawback. It consists in the fact that the lower tier in this case will be fenced on three sides. This may cause discomfort for the child. Therefore, at this stage, it is better to assemble the bed with your own hands in his presence. Supporting posts can be made from thick timber. In this case, first, 2 side parts are created from supports and jumpers. They will serve as end borders. Don't forget about the baseboard. Because of this, it may not be possible to lean the bed posts against the wall tightly enough.

Used for fastening sidewalls to mattress frames. threaded connection. You can use special screws with a hexagon inside. To make the final assembly of the bed as quick and easy as possible, it is recommended to temporarily secure it to vertical supports supports for sun loungers. Make sure that all supports are installed at the same height.

How to make and install a staircase?

Figure 2. Drawing of a ladder for a bunk bed.

Staircase racks can be made from beams or boards. The crossbars are made of timber. You can use cuttings from unnecessary ones for them garden tools. The workpieces are cut into fragments of suitable length, carefully cleaned and polished. When working, you can refer to the following drawing: Fig. 2. It is recommended to install the crossbars with special glue. To do this, you must first prepare holes in the racks for the ends of the crossbars. The holes must be located exactly opposite each other. After the bed is completely ready with your own hands, it is recommended to further strengthen its structure with the help of strapping. It is best made from boards. At the same time, they will serve as a fence. To prevent the possibility of injury and splinters, you need to carefully polish all parts of a homemade bunk bed made of wood so that its surface becomes perfectly smooth. Finally, the bed is painted or varnished. The finished bed is installed in the chosen location, must be attached to the wall using self-tapping screws, and only after that can it be used for its intended purpose.

To reduce the amount of work, you can assemble the bed yourself using a sofa or ottoman.

To reduce the amount of work, you can assemble the bed yourself using a sofa or ottoman. This method is very convenient if you once bought a sofa for one child, and after a while a second one appeared, who also needs somewhere to sleep. In order not to make a bed with your own hands from scratch, you can adapt an existing sofa for this. The second tier should have the same length as the first. The width of the top tier should be slightly smaller. Usually it is 70-80 cm. Thanks to this difference, the finished bunk bed will not look too bulky. First you will need to prepare 2 wooden shields. Their width should be 2 cm greater than the width of the mattress used. Height – 2 cm more than the height of the mattress. Attach these panels to the sides of the mattress using bolts with a diameter of 10 mm. Prepare a fencing strip 50x30 mm. The plank will be attached using metal corners and screws. You will need to attach 2 corner pieces to the bottom edge of the mattress edge. Secure them so that the free shelves face down. Take the block and attach it to the wall with bolts. The block must have the same cross-section as the fencing strip. Pre-prepare recesses in it for the shelves of the corners.

Attach the posts to the top mattress with bolts and place it in place. At the bottom, the racks are attached with bolts to the sides of the sofa. The upper back side of the mattress should be supported by a block. The shelves of the corners should fit into the grooves of the bar. This will ensure the strength of the mattress. Racks are best made from solid hardwood. If the mattress cannot be securely attached to the wall, the same racks will need to be made at the back. Attach the stand to the wall with at least one bolt. Finishing the bed is exactly the same as in the previously described instructions. Happy work!

The question of how to make a bunk bed with your own hands often appears on the “agenda” due to the fact that standard apartments are not distinguished by impressive areas and spaciousness. Even if the children in the family are completely allocated separate room, don't clutter it extra furniture– it is better to leave more free space for games and sports activities.

Therefore, for a family in which two or more children are growing up, a bunk bed design becomes a real godsend. And it’s not at all necessary to rummage through online catalogs or run around furniture stores– this one can be made on your own.

Some types and models of bunk beds

Nowadays, in the assortment of stores you can find many models of beds with two tiers, and on their basis it is quite possible to create your own version of a sleeping place with dimensions and a comfortable staircase suitable for specific conditions and specific location. In addition to traditional bunk structures, you can also make a loft bed, which will free up useful space in the room.

If we consider several various options, it will be easier to choose the most suitable design for your apartment.

Traditional model

This type of bunk bed is traditional and has the simplest design possible. It is quite accessible to self-made and will demand minimum quantity materials.

This model is perfect for a children's room and will significantly save useful space in it, which can be used to arrange a workplace or play area. In addition, the structure can serve as a good platform for intricate children's games, so it should be quite stable, and in some cases it is recommended to firmly fix it to the wall.

The big advantage of this model is the natural wood from which it is made, which is very important for a child’s room. Drawings and a detailed description of the manufacture of this bed model will be discussed below.

Bed option with sofa

A bed with on its first tier folding sofa, will save even more free space in the room than a conventional two-tier design. If the ground floor is arranged regular bed, it will be uncomfortable to just sit and watch TV, since there is no comfortable backrest. Therefore, in addition to the traditional version of a bunk bed presented above, in a children’s room you will still have to look for a place for a sofa or two armchairs, which, of course, will take up enough large area. Well, if a sofa is built into a two-tier complex, it will serve as a sleeping place at night, and during the daytime it will create a comfortable corner for relaxing while sitting or lying down. In addition, when folded, this piece of furniture will not take up a single extra centimeter of space, and when unfolded, it will become a spacious, full-fledged bed.

Transformable bed

To make such a complex yourself, you will have to buy or use an existing one and attach the rest of the structure to it, which, by the way, will be stable and reliable due to the massiveness of the lower tier.

Bed model with drawers

This version of a bunk bed, designed for three sleeping places and additionally equipped with drawers and shelves, will take up slightly more space than a regular traditional bed with two tiers. However, in a children's room you still cannot do without various cabinets and drawers for toys and educational supplies, for which an attached structure can be used, which at the same time serves as a reliable, stable one leading to the second tier.

And in this version there are even three sleeping places and a lot of useful built-in lockers

The sleeping places themselves will take up an area that would accommodate one regular bed. As can be seen in the illustration, the third berth is retractable design, which hides under the mattress of the first tier during the day.

Thus, three children will be provided not only with sleeping places, but also with their own drawers and shelves, and in addition - an excellent play complex into which such a two-tier structure can turn.

Model with a double bed on the first tier

A bed with a double bed on the first tier can be used in one-room apartment, or in a two-room apartment, where it was decided to allocate one of the living spaces as a living room with a workplace. So, the first floor of the bed is reserved for adult bedroom, and the second is intended for a child.

This version of the trapezoidal design will take up the area of the room, which is usually reserved for an unfolded sofa. To make it, you will need few materials, but due to the widely spaced legs and the large massiveness of the lower tier, the bed will be stable and durable.

Bed for a large family

A bunk structure consisting of four beds is an excellent choice for a family with four or more children. This option is more difficult to make, and it will require a lot of material, but the room will become spacious, and the bed will look neat along one of the walls.

The design can be modified and even increased to six sleeping places if it is installed the length of the room and another two-tier section is added, or two pull-out mattresses are installed under the lower tier.

Loft bed

A loft bed is also used for the purpose of rational use of usable space in the room and a kind of “camouflage” of the sleeping area. This option will do not only for small children - it is often chosen for adults, especially if the apartment consists of one room.

This design allows one area of the room to be used for dual purposes - on the second tier there is a wide and comfortable bed, and the lower platform of the first tier is a fairly spacious office, which provides everything for comfortable work.

An important condition for arranging such a structure is its strength, especially if the sleeping place is intended for two people. Typically, such a loft bed is additionally securely fixed to the wall.

Children's loft bed

The children's version of the loft bed is a whole complex that includes a table and a wardrobe in which not only toys, but also items of clothing can be stored. With some justification, such a complex can even be called a small room, which will become a favorite place for a child, since most children always try to create their own “secret” corner, building huts and houses from chairs and blankets.

By making this version of a bed with all the elements necessary for play and study, you can solve several problems at once and save on buying pieces of furniture for a child for many years, since the complex is suitable for both a five-year-old child and a fifteen-year-old teenager. Moreover, when starting to draw up a drawing, it is quite possible to include already existing cabinets and tables in it, which are perfect for the first tier of the structure.

Upon completion of the work, all elements of the loft bed are united in a common color that will be in harmony with the design of the entire children's room.

Making beds with two tiers

Further in the publication we will consider the manufacture and assembly of two different models bunk beds - “classic” type and loft beds. However, many structural elements and their assembly principles are exactly the same, and in order not to repeat ourselves, first of all these nuances will be shown separately, using the example of an ordinary wooden bed. If these principles are mastered, then creating a second tier will no longer be difficult, of course, taking into account certain features.

Principles of high-quality assembly of a wooden bed

In order for the product to turn out neat, it is necessary to perfectly accurately manufacture and process all the details. The instruction table below shows illustrations in which the master uses professional tools– they make the work much faster and easier. However, the same operations can be carried out with an ordinary tool, which is available in almost any good, “handy” owner. Of course, you will have to put in a little more effort, and manufacturing will take longer, but it is still possible.

Illustration
So, all boards must be planed, their surfaces must be perfectly leveled and adjusted to the required size.
This illustration shows the manufacture of the drawer - the side panel of the supporting structure of the bed.
To ensure that the transverse boards on which the mattress will be laid have reliable and durable supports, well-processed bars are attached to the drawers.
Carpenter's glue is applied to the drawer panel along the gluing line of the timber.
Then the glued element is placed on it.
The timber is pressed well and tightened with clamps in several places.
After the glue has dried, the parts are fastened with self-tapping screws through countersunk holes.
Very important point is the manufacture of side stands-legs, since they bear a high load.
In the future, the side and end panels of the bed will be attached to these elements.
Therefore, they are usually assembled from two layers, one of which is the main one, and consists of a whole timber.
The second layer is assembled from individual elements located at a certain distance from each other.
This distance depends on the width of the drawer, the edge of which will be installed in the resulting groove.
Separate pieces of timber are first glued along the markings onto a solid part, and then countersunk holes are drilled into them for self-tapping screws.
Another point that causes difficulties is the creation of patterned forms on some parts, for example, when making semicircular backs of the headboard and footboard.
In order to avoid mistakes and not draw unnecessary rough lines on the actual wooden part, it is recommended to make a paper template from which the form is transferred to the board with neat dashed outlines.
Then, take a flexible plastic strip, which can be bent along the bend of the cut, and the finishing curved boundary of the cut is drawn along it.
Next, the board is cut along the marked line using an electric jigsaw.
This photo shows a professional stationary machine, but it is quite possible to use a hand tool.
After this, the cut line is processed with a manual or stationary router, which will round the edges and rid them of protruding wooden fibers.
In the same way, all the boards necessary to create the elements for the headboard and footboard are cut and processed.
When all the parts necessary for assembling the bed have been made, you should try them on and make the necessary markings.
Next, connecting dowels are manufactured or purchased ready-made.
They can be round or flat, as shown in this illustration.
The finished dowels are laid out on the parts to be connected.
At the same time, it will be possible to visually estimate how many of them will be needed.
In the places where holes will be drilled for installing dowels, with a simple pencil marks are made.
It is easier to drill holes for round dowels by selecting a drill the right size.
If flat dowels are used for connections, then several holes are drilled nearby with a drill, which are then combined with a chisel or cutter.
The dowels are inserted into the holes without glue for now, since it is first necessary to pre-assemble the structure to ensure that there are no distortions.
After this, the bed posts are put on the free ends of the dowels.
To completely seat the parts during assembly, a rubber or wooden hammer(mallet).
Having made the connections of the parts of one of the sides of the backrest, proceed to mounting the second rack.
Having collected individual elements beds, it is necessary to pre-assemble the entire structure of the “ground floor” to make sure that all the parts fit together exactly.
Base boards are laid on the bed frame - this process is carried out to determine optimal distance between them.
When the size of the gaps between the boards is determined, fragments of the block are cut along it and glued between the boards onto the support beam on which the base boards are laid.
These elements will allow the boards to be in a given position without shifting, so they are simply laid without securing the edges with screws.
After all the preliminary operations have been carried out and any necessary adjustments have been made, the entire structure is disassembled and reassembled, but “tightly”, that is, using glue.
The illustration clearly shows how the bed posts are connected to the headboard panels using dowels coated with glue.
The glued bed frame must be tightened with clamps until it dries completely, and then it is additionally fastened with self-tapping screws through countersunk holes.
The illustration clearly shows the pieces of timber attached to the longitudinal support shelf of the drawer - between them the base boards under the mattress will subsequently be laid.
The final connection of the drawer and the backs of the headboard and footboard is made with self-tapping screws.
This illustration shows what cut needs to be made on the bottom of the baseboard leg so that the bed can be installed flush against the wall.

So, having made all the parts that are needed according to the specific drawing of the selected model, you can proceed to self-creation this original piece of furniture, using the shown principles of assembling the main parts and assemblies of wood.

Classic type wooden bunk bed

This option for a bunk bed can be called the simplest of all existing ones, which is why it is worth considering.

Transformable bed Mobi

This figure shows the main design details in numbers.

Detailing of a “classic” type bunk bed

This table shows the dimensions and number of parts, and this data should be enough even for a novice craftsman to make them, based on the instructions presented above, and then assemble a bunk bed from them.

Below is an illustrated instruction table that shows mutual arrangement and connecting all the parts of the bunk bed. Based on the diagrams and text accompanying them, it will not be difficult to carry out independent installation.

(In some illustrations, dimensions are given in inches. Converting to millimeters is easy: 1 inch = 25.4 mm.)

IllustrationBrief description of the operation performed
This is the side supporting part of the bed - the drawer, designed to hold the transverse slats.
There are 4 such panels made, they form the length of the upper and lower boxes of the bed.
This figure shows the principle of assembling the headboard and footboard, which consist of posts and crossbars.
In turn, the racks are made up of solid timber and separate sections that cover the holes in the joints of the parts and form a groove for installing the frame into it.
Headboard and footboard assembly diagram with detailed details and dimensions.
Here you need to pay attention to the fact that in the upper part of the back of the headboard there is solid timber The racks are secured with three separate pads, since the fencing parts will be secured between them.
For the back of the footboard, instead of three overlays, one whole one is fixed in its upper part.
Assembled headboard and footboard parts.
Based on the dimensions given in the figure, it will be easy to mark and assemble these bed elements.
This drawing shows the details of the stairs and the railing of the upper berth.
The staircase post indicates the location of the three steps.
When attaching the lower step to the footboard post, you need to make sure that the fastening screws of the step do not rest against the frame fastening screws.
Now, for the comfort of further work, you need to fasten the headboard and footboard with the lower and upper drawers.
To do this, they are installed in the gaps left between the linings, and each of their sides is secured with four self-tapping screws.
When the structure is firmly on the floor, you can begin installing the staircase handrail, its steps, and the railing bars.
The elements are fastened to each other, as well as to the headboard and footboard posts, with self-tapping screws.
After all the elements have been assembled into a single structure, you can lay transverse boards between the sections of bars fixed to the frames.
The last step will be to finalize the joints so that there is no burr left on them.
Then all that remains is to clean the structure from dust, install it in the right place, place mattresses on the sleeping places - and the bed is ready for use.

I would like to add that it would be a good idea to secure the assembled structure to the wall, since children usually use it not only as a sleeping place, but also as a sports complex. To avoid unpleasant moments, it is better to ensure in advance that the structure is stable and safe.

Loft bed

Another bed option that will help save space in small apartment, even with only one room. As already mentioned, the space occupied by such a bed can be usefully used for various needs.

Loft bed

To make this loft bed model you will need the following materials:

  • Board 50 × 100 × 2500 mm - 14 pcs.
  • Board 120×25×1000 mm - 13 pcs.
  • Board 50 × 150 × 2500 mm - 4 pcs.

The diagram below gives a complete idea of what the finished bed will look like. In addition, it is possible to determine own sizes design, since the bed may be larger or smaller than the option shown in the drawing, depending on the height and age of the child, as well as the size of the room.

Such a design can easily be modified into a more compact version; a side platform is not installed, but a staircase is installed instead, which will take up much less space.

The instruction table below will show the order of work and the dimensions that must be observed during assembly.

IllustrationBrief description of the operation performed
Based on the presented drawing, the left end part of the structure is assembled from prepared boards.
The crossbars are also connected to the posts using dowels, which are placed in the drilled holes using wood glue, and then additionally fixed with self-tapping screws - their caps must be deepened into the wood by 2÷3 mm.
A platform with stairs will be attached to this side.
Next, the right end side of the structure is assembled in the same way.
It differs significantly from the previous one, since it serves as one of the sides of the fence.
The next step is to glue onto the supporting boards of the frame (tsars) and then screw them with self-tapping screws into the bars with delimiting board sections 30 mm long, between which the transverse slats will be laid under the mattress.
Next, the end parts of the structure are connected with drawers and enclosing boards.
All parts are assembled using bolts or dowels and screws.
If dowels are used, they must be placed on glue.
As a result, the internal area of the bed should be 1000x1900 mm in size.
After this, lamella boards are laid on the protruding beam - the basis of the berth.
The next step is to assemble the support frame-rack for the podium platform.
It must be durable, since it will bear quite a large load.
The next operation is to install the platform frame to the frame, and the entire structure is attached to the bed.
To fasten all the elements of the podium, it is recommended to use metal corners that are screwed onto the inside of the frame.
Here you need to take into account that the structure must be strong enough to support the weight of an adult.
Next, the podium area is covered with prepared boards.
It is best to place them on glue, and then screw them in with self-tapping screws, recessing their caps into the wood by 3-4 mm, and seal the remaining recesses with a mixture of sawdust and glue.
All edges of the boards must be carefully processed until smooth, so that the possibility of suffering one or another injury is eliminated.
The next step is making the stairs, and it can be called the most difficult of the entire process of building a bed.
The boards must not only be perfectly processed, but also their edges must be cut at an angle of 45 degrees, but at the same time the top is cut on one side, and the bottom on both sides.
To make it easier to mark the places where the bars are secured under the steps, one board can be placed on the podium in a position in which the staircase will be attached to it.
The steps should be parallel to the floor - this can be marked using a regular building level.
Having marked one of the boards, mark the second one in exactly the same way, with complete symmetry.
The marking points will set the direction for drawing lines along which uncut bars are screwed to the boards. Their edges can be trimmed after fastening - exactly at the level of the end part of the board.
Next, step boards are laid and secured onto the fixed bars.
To make it easier to work, first fix one board at the top and bottom - this will give the structure the necessary rigidity. After this it will be easy to screw on the remaining steps.
All fasteners must be recessed into the wood, and the holes must be sealed with a mixture of glue and sawdust.
The finished staircase must be securely secured to the podium and the structure can then be carefully tested.
After this, all holes, sealed with putty made from glue and sawdust, are sanded with sandpaper.
The next step is to paint or coat the entire assembled structure, if desired, with a water-based varnish.
To make it easy to apply varnish or paint on surfaces, without being strongly absorbed into the wood, it is advisable to first coat all parts with a wood primer, which will create a film, filling the pores of the material.

This publication presented the most simple designs bunk beds that can be made even by a beginner. If you don't have everyone at hand necessary tools for wood processing, or there is not enough confidence that the process of precise processing of workpieces will go flawlessly, you can entrust this work to professionals by contacting a carpentry workshop, providing the purchased material and drawings with dimensions. The master will make all the parts, and all that remains is to independently assemble the structure at the place of its installation.

And at the end of the publication, another easy-to-make version of a children's bunk bed is shown in the attached video:

Video: how to make a children's bunk bed
