Hanging systems for the kitchen. Railing systems for the kitchen: types and installation instructions. Why are roof rails needed?

Quite a difficult task of optimal placement kitchen utensils allows you to install railings in the kitchen. The railing most often consists of a fairly strong straight or curved tube fixed at a short distance from the wall or ceiling. Objects needed for cooking or other kitchen work are hung on this tube (directly or with the help of additional devices). For example, you can hang frying pans, pots, knives, spatulas, pouring spoons, ladles, skimmers and much more on the railing.

Railing is a pipe fixed at a short distance from the wall or ceiling.

Main types of roof rails

The most common type of railing is a not very thick chrome-plated steel tube, fixed to the wall surface using racks with holes and equipped with additional elements designed for hanging necessary items. These can be hooks, wire loops, nets, cells or rings for plates, bottles or glassware, towel clips, even a stand for a notebook or recipe book.

Depending on the mounting option and design, roof rails can be:

  • horizontal, straight or curved;
  • suspended, fixed to the ceiling on thin rods;
  • vertical, located above the working surfaces of tables;
  • combined, consisting of horizontal and vertical sections;
  • specialized, for example, magnetic.

Horizontal rails are the most common. They are usually mounted near frying plates, ovens, between the walls of cabinets or above the surface of cutting tables. These roof rails can be used both as a single system and in the form of separate sections located in necessary places. In addition, they can be installed in corner areas between walls or cabinets.

Hanging rails are installed in the free zone of the kitchen so that the kitchen utensils hung on them do not interfere with free movement. Often hanging rails

installed above the bar counter and equipped with holders for glasses, mugs and bottles. You can hang napkins or towels on them. Vertical railing allows you to save space above the working surface of the table; it can be installed not only on the wall, but also on the side surfaces kitchen cabinets

. If there is not enough free space in the kitchen, combined designs are used, including both horizontal and vertical elements. Specialized roof rails are usually intended for some type of kitchen utensil. These can be railings with a basket (for detergents

), magnetic (for knives, forks or spoons, etc.). Most often for the manufacture of roof rails, as well as fastening and hanging elements

steel with a polished chrome-plated or nickel-plated surface is used for it. However, at the request of the customer, the type of coating can be different, for example, silver, gold or copper, including various patterns and combinations of shades.

  • To install the railing yourself, you will need the following:
  • drill with drills;
  • level gauge;
  • screwdriver or screwdriver;
  • hammer;
  • hex wrench;

screws and dowels.

Choosing a location and installing a roof rail The location for installing the railing is selected based on the location of the kitchen furniture items and functional purpose individual elements and ease of use. Carrier length steel tube railing, regardless of the shape and options for its location, is limited only by the size of the room required free space

and, of course, aesthetic preferences.

The standard length of the railing is 3 m, but if necessary, it can be shortened or extended using special couplings and inserts. The ends of the pipe are closed with decorative plugs to ensure safety of use and give the structure a finished look. After the initial preliminary marking of the location, determining the length, number and shape of the rails, we install supporting structures, which will be the basis for attaching the pipes to load-bearing wall , ceiling or furniture walls

It should be taken into account that the installation step of the railing fastening elements should not exceed 0.5 m, that is, if a pipe 1 meter long is installed, then the number of points for attaching it to the load-bearing surface should be at least 3, 2 at the edges and 1 in the middle parts.

Markings for installing horizontal or vertical railing should be done using building level or a plumb line at the height required for hanging objects. When marking, you should take into account the size and weight of kitchen utensils hung on the railing and, accordingly, additional holders. If you plan to use the railing for massive objects, then the fastening step should be reduced.

Drilling holes for installing roof rails

As a rule, kitchen walls are finished with tiles, which are laid on concrete base. In this regard, drilling holes for the railing holders must be done with a special drill with a Pobedit tip or diamond coating using an electric drill or hammer drill.

After the final marking of the mounting points for the railing supports, “crosses” with a side length of 5-6 mm are applied on the surface of the tile at the drilling points using a diamond glass cutter. In this case, when drilling, the tile will not crack, the hole will be located at the required point.

To install a railing of small thickness with a relatively low mechanical load on it, you can use a drill with a diameter of 5 mm to drill holes. If it is necessary to provide large loads, it is necessary to use drills with a diameter of 8 mm or more. The depth of the holes is determined by the length of the mounting screws and the length plastic inserts into which the mounting screws will be screwed.

After the holes for attaching the railing posts are drilled, standard plastic plugs are inserted into them, the length of which corresponds to the length of the mounting screws. With their help it is necessary to secure the supports. Using self-tapping screws, intermediate fastening pins are secured to the ceiling, room walls or furniture walls according to the markings (for fastening load-bearing racks).

Care must be taken to ensure that the screws are tightened all the way and that the supporting pins are installed without any backlash or distortion.

The railing posts are placed on the supporting pins and secured to them using shaped screws. When installing, make sure that the screw heads are not visible. For example, on a horizontal rail they should be located at the bottom of the post, and on a vertical rail they should be located either on the top or bottom side of the posts (depending on the height of the mounting points).

Installing the roof rail tube on the supports

The racks or supports have special holes into which you need to pass the railing tube. The ends of the tube should be as symmetrical as possible relative to the posts; during installation, you should also avoid great force and try not to damage the polished surface of the railing. The final fixation of the tube in the holes of the racks is done with additional screws included in the delivery set of the railing. The ends of the tube are closed with a special plug, consisting of a plastic plug with a chrome tip attached to the plug with a screw. The plastic plug of the plug must be assembled, then hammered into the end of the railing pipe with light blows of a wooden or rubber mallet.

The final stage of installing the railing in the kitchen is installation on the supporting pipe required quantity hooks, support strips, nets, loops, special holders or rings. After this, you can begin hanging and placing various kitchen utensils.

Horizontal placed in sections or drawn in one line along the wall. On hooks for horizontal rails you can place systems of shelves, holders, containers and individual items dishes. Horizontal rails also include corner systems that usually run above the sink.

Vertical rails mounted on countertops or cabinets, installed between the floor and ceiling, they are often used in a bar counter system. You can attach hanging shelves and coasters to them.

Hanging rails suspended from the ceiling. Typically, such systems are installed by owners of island kitchens.

Accessories

Properly selected accessories improve the functionality of roof rails, expanding the number of items that can be placed on them.

Hooks are the basis of all railing systems. Shelves, nets, containers, and holders are hung on them. They often act as an independent element of the system. Ladles, skimmers, mugs, scissors, etc. are hung on them. Some housewives even hang frying pans and saucepans on hooks.

Shelves are available in a wide variety:

They are great for storing a variety of things. They are convenient for arranging jars and containers for spices. You can place tall and long cans and bottles on shelves with long hangers. They even sell a slanted shelf to accommodate a cookbook with open recipe, which will be convenient to hang over work area.

In mesh shelves located near the sink, detergents and cleaning products, fruits that drain after washing, etc. will find their place. Mesh shelves are sold in a variety of configurations: rectangular, square, sector-shaped, round, oval, etc. Mesh shelves are also good for storing spatulas and a slotted spoon near the stove. This is where the stirring and turning processes take place.

The holders can accommodate whisks and spatulas, paper towels and food foil. There are holders for wine glasses, glasses, bottles, cups and other utensils. For paper towels, you can purchase a towel holder with a serrated edge to make them easier to tear off. The place for such an accessory is near the sink.

In addition, you can list such accessories as suspension systems for storing spices, wall-mounted bread bins, baskets, glasses for kitchen utensils, dryers, soap dishes. The systems can be supplemented with magnetic elements, convenient for storing knives.

Railings are a great way to decorate the kitchen interior beautiful dishes and other decorative accessories. They can be used as a support to create additional lighting for the work area by placing small directional LED lights on them.

What color are the roof rails?

Rails are made of metal (stainless steel, aluminum, brass), polymers and wood. Stainless steel rails are the most common due to their practicality and affordability. You can choose roof rails for the kitchen different colors: chrome plated, with gold, copper, bronze plating, black nickel plated. Plugs and other fittings are available to match the color of the railing.

Here it would be appropriate to talk about the withstand load, which must be taken into account when choosing a roof rail. An anodized aluminum product is not suitable for use over a large area. Aluminum railing can only be done in small sections. Of course, stainless steel has the greatest strength.

When choosing the color of the railing system, you need to focus on the style of the kitchen interior and color kitchen appliances(stoves and hoods), as well as furniture handles.

How to choose roof rails for your kitchen interior

Pipes are not suitable for a kitchen in a minimalist style. The laws of minimalism require a minimum of details. Spices, towels, kitchen utensils - all this is conveniently placed on the crossbar, but is completely unsuitable for a strict minimalist kitchen.

In interiors where there is room for charming little things, the railing will come in handy. It looks great in the interior of Italian and Mediterranean cuisine, and will fit stylishly into Provence and country. For classic and retro styles, rails made of bronze or gold are suitable. Wooden rails look good in classic kitchens, matched to the color of the kitchen furniture.

Chrome-plated systems will look good in modern high-tech kitchens. For modern fashionable lofts, steampunk, industrial, you can find excellent models of systems assembled in the style of water pipes in specialized stores.

To create a certain style, it is important what hangs on the railing. Checkered textiles and jars-boxes painted using the decoupage technique are suitable for the shabby chic style. Small pots with fragrant herbs, large glass jars for tea and coffee will complement Provence. Wooden grinders for salt and pepper, copper mortars for spices will decorate the retro interior.

As for ordinary urban interiors, it is important not to overload the roof rails. A few large elements and small ones will be enough. For example, you can place a set for spices, oil and vinegar near the stove, a hanging shelf with cups and tea jars closer to the eating area, and a mixer near the work area.

Installing roof rails in the kitchen

Placement of roof rails
Traditionally, railings are placed near the work area in the apron area so that the housewife can conveniently reach kitchen utensils with her hand while working in the kitchen. Don't limit yourself to just one roof rail: consider several options.

For example, one long rail 1-1.5 m long can be hung above the work area, and a short one can be hung next to the stove and sink.

In some interiors, additional fastening of horizontal pipes on the side walls of the cabinets will look organic. For corner places, you can buy systems bent at right angles. If you place the crossbars on different heights, you get not just a distribution of objects, but also an original decorative element.

The crossbar should be located at a height of 40-50 cm from the countertop. When placing rails under wall cabinets, a distance of 8 cm from them is considered optimal. In an island kitchen, hanging systems are often placed above the dining table.

When placing accessories, try to adhere to the rule: items that are often used should be placed closer to the work area.

For example, shelves with salt and pepper, lighters, and potholders would look appropriate next to the stove. Spoons, ladle, skimmers should be kept further from the stove so that they do not get dirty with splashing fat.

Railing installation
Installation of the railing begins with markings. The starting point, the end point and several intermediate ones are marked if the railing is long. It is recommended to install the railing holders at a distance of 50 cm. For more accurate markings, it is more convenient to use a laser level.

In selected places, holes with a diameter of 6-8 mm are drilled to attach the supports of the holders. If the railing section falls on a tiled apron, the holes are drilled with a special tile drill. Dowels are inserted into the holes (usually they come complete with railing systems) and support pins for the holders are attached to them with self-tapping screws.

The railing system is assembled in accordance with the assembly instructions: plugs are attached, holders are put on the pipe. There should be equal distances from the plugs to the outer holders. If necessary, the railing pipe can be shortened with a regular hacksaw.

The system, together with the holders, is placed on the supports. Using a hex key, tighten the bushings that secure the holders to the support until they stop. The holders must be positioned so that the fixing screws are at the bottom.

There is another assembly sequence. Holders are immediately placed on the supports, through which the railing pipe is pulled. The holders are fixed on the pipe. Finally, plugs are placed on the pipe while hanging. Each master chooses how it is more convenient for him to assemble the railing.

If the system passes through a corner, you will have to purchase additional special corner connections. Corner connectors are either 90 or 135 degree arcs. They are attached without holders, connecting straight rails to each other.
