Phlox Encyclopedia. The best varieties of phlox of domestic selection. Phlox salient features

Varietal purity is an extremely important indicator for plant collectors. Among the fans of phlox, heated debates on this topic do not subside. There are countless varieties of bush phlox. Even experts will not name the exact amount, since sometimes they cannot establish whether the variety is original or it has a double under a different name.

And what about the old varieties? It is unlikely that they are all described and cataloged. And, of course, the true name is in doubt. How do I install it? According to the old descriptions, this can only be done approximately.

Add folk varieties here. How many are scattered in the gardens! People have given a name to these phloxes long ago. Under this name they are sold in the markets and passed on to friends and acquaintances. But the variety is not officially registered anywhere, which means that this phlox cannot even be called a variety!

This is what I want to talk about. Phloxes are our old favorites. We value them not for their big names, but for profuse flowering, unpretentiousness and fabulous beauty.

In magazines, unnamed phloxes, which are grown by amateurs, were dubbed "mongrels", "breedless" or "podzabornye" flowers. They are also called “grandmother's phloxes” because they are sold in the markets to pensioners. On forums on the Internet, the most zealous phlox lovers call to "fight for the purity of phlox" and grow in gardens only varietal plants.

What is the difference between “grandmother's” phlox from its kindred brother?

Five differences

1. Prestige. The names of all varietal phloxes are registered in the official catalogs. When the name of the variety is unknown, scrupulous growers will not even think about buying it, no matter how beautiful the flower is. Why? It's just not prestigious. Is it right or not? If you want to collect as many different colors of phlox as possible, then the absence of a variety name should not stop. But if your goal is to create a reference collection of varieties, then you have to be principled and not litter it.

2. Certainty. When buying phlox on the market, the question: "What phlox is this?" you will most often be answered: "Lilac" or "Pink". And if the name of the variety is called, then, as a rule, it does not correspond to reality.

Phloxes of "noble origin" have a pedigree, and ideally it is described in detail. For many phloxes, the parent variety from which this descendant was obtained is also indicated. For example, Sandro Botticelli. Author: Reprev Yu.A., year 1963. Obtained from the variety P.G. Gaganova Evening song. The following is a detailed description of the flower. Such a solid lineage is already a guarantee that the variety is worth purchasing. Variety registration is not an easy task, therefore only the most worthy applicants are selected for this procedure.

And most importantly, in modern catalogs there is a digital portrait of a flower! From it, you can more accurately determine the variety.

Do you want a specific coloration? Then you shouldn't buy a pig in a poke in the market. Contact the nursery or order phlox by mail, pre-selecting them from the catalog.

3. Reliability. I do not want to offend everyone in a row, but the markets often sell what is a pity to throw away. Perhaps grandmother's phlox degenerated long ago, has small flowers, loose inflorescence and is strongly affected by powdery mildew. However, in the spring, the plant looks pretty bearable. Why not sell it? After some time, you will notice a forgery, but the seller is already gone.

In nurseries, varietal plants are kept under vigilant control. Sick and frail plants are discarded. This is a condition for survival in the modern world: if you want to have regular customers, take care of your reputation.

4. Purity guarantee. In order to obtain a large number seedlings for sale private traders can propagate phlox seeds. And, as you know, seedlings do not retain their maternal traits, since they are free pollination hybrids. In nurseries, varietal phloxes reproduce only vegetatively. Thus, varietal purity is guaranteed.

5. Price. For many, price is an essential indicator. Plants are usually cheaper on the market. But where is the guarantee that you will not bring another pink phlox with an unstable, pale color to the garden? At an exhibition or nursery, you pay for the authenticity of the variety. Imagine that you are choosing between a purebred dog and a mongrel - you have to pay for the pedigree.

So, decide for yourself what is more important to you: purity of the variety, prestige or cheaper flowers?

In fairness, I must say that among those plants that we buy from grandmothers, there are real masterpieces worthy of being named. But the registration of a variety is a rather troublesome business, so many phloxes walk through our gardens under the name "pink phlox".

How to identify a variety?

Many amateur gardeners already have a decent collection of phlox. Some were bought on the market, some were propagated by cuttings, some were donated by neighbors. How do you know the names of the varieties of all these plants?

With the development of the Internet, the task has become much easier. Instead of flipping through reference books in the library, you can go to the site where the phlox catalog is published and compare your photos with a sample.

For a more accurate identification, you will have to visit several sites. The more photos you compare, the better you will know the characteristics of the variety and the more reliably establish its correspondence.

In the catalogs, after the name of the variety, its author (originator) and the year of creation (or registration) are indicated. This is followed by encrypted data about the appearance: the diameter of the flower, the height of the plant and the timing of flowering. Then - a detailed description of the color.

For example, New (photo 6). Author: Kharchenko E.D., 1952 Description: 3.7-4.3; 65-80; SP. White with blue shadows, in the center there are bluish dots with a crimson tint, blue buds. The petals are wavy. The inflorescence is round, large, dense. Flowering begins in mid-July. The bush is compact, beautiful, grows quickly. Winter hardy, healthy. Stored for a long time in the cut. An excellent, reliable variety.

Photos provide the most information. The most detailed catalogs contain several images of the same variety, taken from different angles. The structure of flowers is given in large, their tubes are shown below. For comparison, the flowers were shot at different times of the day.

Novice phlox growers often find themselves at a loss when they learn how much similar varieties exists in directories. For example, any white-pink variety with a raspberry ring in the center, without hesitation, is called Europe (Europa). Under this name on the market they sell completely different varieties, moreover, unlike Europe (photo 2 and 3). To determine the authenticity of a variety, it is important to know how wide the ringlet is, what saturation its color is, a clear or vague border at the ring.

It is very difficult to identify white varieties. In the ROLF catalog ( Russian Society Lovers of Phlox) of the whites, photographs of varieties are given: July, Zhukovsky, Maria, Merlinka, Michelangelo, Heaven, Peterhof and others. And here the subtleties are important: whether the petals go over each other or not, what shade the flower tube has, what color the pharynx and bud have ... Finally, if you do not see the difference, compare the height of the plant and the timing of flowering. So, the Zhukovsky variety has almost completely white petals and contrasting lilac buds. In the Anya Popova variety, the petals go over each other, but in the Heavenly variety they do not combine.

The variegated varieties Mashunya, Natasha - Natasha (aka Sonata), Mishenka and Peppermint Twist are often confused (photo 4, 5). The stripes on the petals of these plants are of different shades and different widths... These differences are difficult to grasp when there is only one variety in front of you. But they are clearly visible when you can see two, three flowering plants or it is possible to compare photos (photos 4 and 5).

To "uninitiated" phlox growers, the varieties Success (aka Laura) and the Native of Tarasovka seem to be the same. But if you look closely, Success has a clearer white star than the Native of Tarasovka, in the latter it is somewhat blurred and more radiant.

There is very little information about some old varieties even in reputable catalogs. And then you have to rely only on photography. One of these varieties is Versailles. The author is not known, the year is not known. And only a photograph makes it possible to establish the name of a common variety that grows in almost every garden (photo 1, p. 12). Additionally, it can be said that it is a very stable and healthy variety. Apparently, this explains his longevity. Versailles is a real "grandmother's phlox", because our grandmothers really planted it, and this is 50-60 years ago.

Although the homeland of paniculate phlox is North America, we can safely say that these are the most beloved Russian flowers. Since ancient times, they have been used to decorate both rich estates and village front gardens. About these unpretentious, winter-hardy and exceptionally ornamental plants tells Vera Germanovna BORISOVA, candidate of biological sciences,breeder of phloxes, agrofirm "Poisk".

Phloxes can quickly turn your garden into a blooming oasis.Many of us are familiar with their wonderful aroma from childhood. The height of the bushes is from 40-50 to 150-180 cm. The size of the flower is from 0.5 to 5.5 cm, and the inflorescence can reach 30 cm in diameter! There are varieties of early, medium and late flowering.

At correct selection phloxes can decorate your garden with their elegant inflorescences from late June until severe frosts. The variety of colors is amazing. For connoisseurs of gentle tones, there are varieties with white, pale pink, light lilac flowers. For lovers of bright colors, phloxes are purple, red, crimson. There are varieties that have different shades of purple during the day, and turn blue in the evening, they are called blue.

A significant part of the assortment of paniculata phlox was created in our country. Domestic phloxes are not only not inferior to foreign ones, but often surpass them.

Our phloxes are distinguished by excellent colors and higher winter hardiness than most "Europeans". It's natural since they've passed natural selection severe Russian winters.

Work on the development of new varieties began in our country relatively recently - in the 30s of the last century. Our most famous phlox breeder is Pavel Gavrilovich Gaganov. It was he who created such wonderful varieties as ‘Success’ ‘GirlMoscow region ',' Ivan-Zarya ',' Olenka ',' Fairy tale ' and many others. His phlox is very popular today.

'Success'. P.G. Gaganov. The diameter of the flower is 4 cm, the height of the bush is 70-80 cm, the flowering period is average. Purplish violet with a bright white center. The inflorescence is round-conical, large, dense. Compact bush with dense dark green foliage.

‘Ivan-Zarya’. P.G. Gaganov. The diameter of the flower is 3.6 cm, the height of the bush is 110 cm, the flowering period is medium late. Very bright, light orange-red with a cherry ring. Star-shaped flower. The inflorescence is round-conical, large, but airy. The bush is tall, strong, spreading, grows quickly. Long-lasting flowering.

It is impossible not to name other outstanding breeders.- M.F.Sharonov, B.V. Kvasnikova, E.D. Kharchenko... Ekaterina Dmitrievna Kharchenko has a few varieties, but each of them is a "pearl". I really like her‘New’- an almost flawless variety.

New '. E. D. Kharchenko. The diameter of the flower is 3.7 cm, the height of the bush is 65-70 cm, the flowering period is medium late. White with blue shadows and a purple eye, blue buds. The petals are wavy. The inflorescence is round, large, dense. The bush is compact, beautiful, grows quickly. Abundant and long-lasting flowering. Stored for a long time in the cut.

Work is actively underway to restore, preserve and increase domestic varieties in one of the largest Russian seed companies - "Poisk Agrofirm".

A unique program for obtaining healthy phloxes by the microcloning method has been developed and implemented here. In particular, new and already popular varieties of such prominent our breeders asYuri Andreevich Reprev and Elena Alekseevna Konstantinova(photo 5-7), as well as varieties of our own selection.

‘Margarita’. E. A. Konstantinova. The diameter of the flower is 4.3 cm, the height of the bush is 75 cm, the flowering period is average. Bright crimson-red with a darker small eye, round-conical inflorescence, dense. Does not fade, does not deteriorate from precipitation. The bush is powerful, the stems are strong, with dense light green foliage.

‘Anna Karenina’. E. And Konstantinova. The diameter of the flower is 4.2 cm, the height of the bush is 80 cm, the flowering period is average. An unusual rose-red with an ash haze and a bright center. The flower is wheel-shaped with petals slightly curling inward. Winner of many exhibitions.

‘Nabat’. E.A. Konstantinov. The diameter of the flower is 3.8 cm, the height of the bush is 80 cm, the flowering period is medium late. Carmine red, catchy, does not fade. The inflorescence is fractional-conical, branched, large, of medium density, long flowering. Sprawling bush, grows quickly. A very hardy variety.

Phlox paniculata has been breeding at Agrofirma Poisk for over 10 years. Several thousand seedlings are grown annually. As a result of multi-stage selection and long-term testing, the most promising of these seedlings give rise to new varieties.

It should be borne in mind that many seedlings in the first years of life have significant variability. Color, size of flowers, their shape can change. Often, changes concern the shape and density of the inflorescence, as well as the harmony of the bush. (The harmony of the bush is understood as the ratio of the height of the inflorescence to the total height of the plant.)Young seedlings tend to have larger flowers and a denser inflorescence. Therefore, they are usually more decorative than adult plants grown from them. For an objective assessment, observation is necessary for at least three years, since only in the third year after germination do phloxes have a constant color and shape. For many seedlings, the quality of flowering is highly dependent on weather conditions.

One of the tasks of the breeder is to select plants that bloom magnificently and continuously from year to year. And this requires even more prolonged observations. Thus, the breeding process is quite time consuming and expensive if it is carried out according to all the rules. Over the course of a number of years, we have to look after and observe many seedlings, of which the bulk will eventually be culled.

Seedling, selected for to become a new variety, it must have the following qualities:

1. Good growth and development.

2. Resistance to unfavorable climatic conditions of the given zone. Good winter hardiness.

3. Resistance to disease damage.

4. Beautiful and stable color of the corolla (that is, it should not fade in the sun and change color from dew or rain).

5. Long flowering time (at least 25-30 days)

6. Strong (non-leafy) bush, strong, even stems.

7. Good ability to vegetative propagation, stability of varietal traits.

But most importantly, you need to make sure that this variety is really new, that is, that it differs significantly from the already known varieties of a similar type. To do this, you need to carry out the appropriate comparison with similar varieties.

Differences may relate to decorative features(color, size, flower shape, inflorescence characteristics, height and shape of the bush, etc.) or economically useful(flowering time, disease resistance, winter hardiness, etc.).

I would like to draw the readers' attention to some promising varieties of our selection. Imagine: “Winter, dawn breaks. For the purest White snow pink-lilac glare falls. " This picture is presented at the height of summer at the sight of a large-flowered phlox. 'Winter morning':

The flower is white with lilac-pink shadows, to the center of the shadow is thicker. The petals are slightly wavy. The inflorescence is round, large. The bush is durable, winter-hardy. Good, both in a flower garden and in a bouquet.

V last years are in great demand small-flowered varieties with a corolla diameter of less than 3 cm. Our small flowersEgorka, Droplet, Miniature, Eurostyle Lilacand others, in addition to the original type, are distinguished by increased resistance to rain and wind.The number of simultaneously blossoming flowers on one peduncle in some of them reaches 150-180, which is about 3 times more than in large-flowered phlox! They grow quickly and multiply easily. Thanks to the calm pastel color, these varieties harmoniously fit into any flower beds, especially those made in a natural style.

Phlox salient features

Phlox is a genus of herbaceous plants and shrubs belonging to the Polemoniaceae family. All representatives of this genus, with the exception of Phlox Drummond, are perennials and, with proper care, can grow without transplanting for 5 years. In the wild, Phloxes live in countries with temperate climates, mainly in North America, Siberia and the Far East. These plants can be found in meadows, forest edges, mountain slopes and in humid areas.

The name of the plant reflects the fiery bloom of some species: "phlox" with Greek translates as "flame". In addition, the flowers shine and glow in the bright sun. For many years there has been a beautiful legend about the origin of the Phloxes, according to which Odysseus and his companions, having overcome many obstacles in the kingdom of Hades, threw torches on the ground that illuminated their path. Soon the torches turned into beautiful flowers- Phloxes and thus immortalized the heroes' feat in memory.

Phlox's rhizome is powerful, most of the thin branching roots are located at a depth of 20 cm. Stems are erect or curly, depending on the species, they reach a height of 10-150 cm. Leaves are opposite, linear or oval, green in color. The flowers are fragrant, small (about 3 cm in diameter), collected in a large inflorescence, have 5 petals, can be of various shapes and colors: from white to indigo. Flowering, depending on the species, is observed from May to September. The fruit is an oval box with three nests, where small seeds are placed.

Phloxes look great on flower beds, borders, rock gardens, rabatkas, mixborders. Low-growing species are widely used as a container or ground cover crop. This plant is also used for cutting.

The Phlox genus is represented by about 60 species, but about 40 are used in culture.

Tall bush erect species:

Phlox paniculata (Phlox paniculata) - plant height is 50-150 cm.This species is famous for straight stems, oval-lanceolate leaves, July flowering and flowers different colors(the only exception is yellow), collected in a paniculate inflorescence;

Phlox Caroline (Phlox carolina) - blooms in early summer, grows in height from 60 cm to one meter and is distinguished by rather large leaves and corymbose or paniculate inflorescences. Mrs. Lingard is known for its elongated white flowers and Bill Baker is known for its pink-red flowers;

Spotted phlox (Phlox makulata) - notable for stems with small spots and cylindrical inflorescences that bloom in early July.

Loose species:

Wide-spread phlox, or Canadian (Phlox divaricata) - about 25 cm in height, is distinguished by loose sod, erect stem, oval-lanceolate leaves and flowers of white, blue, pale purple or crimson color, which begin to bloom in late spring;

Stolon-bearing phlox (Phlox stolonifera) - creates a lush carpet with dense sod, as, thanks to stolons, it grows quickly. It reaches a height of 30 cm, has medium-sized winter-green leaves and fragrant flowers of various colors;

Phlox Drummond (Phlox drummondii) is an annual, the height of which is 40-60 cm. It blooms from June to late autumn with white, beige, purple, red or scarlet flowers in the shape of a star or circle.

Low-growing creeping species:

Siberian phlox (Phlox sibirica) - up to 15 cm in height, characterized by single or multiple flowers of white or pink color;

Subulate phlox (Phlox subulata) - up to 10 cm high, differs in narrow, subulate leaves and white, pink, blue or purple flowers, which are collected in inflorescences 3-10 in each. Blossoming in May-June, sometimes re-blooms in autumn;

White-bordered phlox (Phlox albomarginata) - grows no higher than 10 cm and is notable for light green leaves with a white border and white-pink flowers;

Phlox adorable (Phlox amoena) - in the wild it grows mainly on the hills. This plant reaches a height of 30 cm, has pubescent stems, lanceolate leaves and flowers of various colors, collected in umbellate or corymbose inflorescences that begin flowering in late spring;

Forked phlox (Phlox bifida) - grows up to 15 cm in height, has pubescent stems, linear leaves and flowers with dissected petals, blooming in May;

Northern phlox (Phlox borealis) - a plant with winter-green leaves and a large number of purple flowers;

Phlox multiflorous (Phlox multiflora) - up to 10 cm in height, has a branched stem, smooth leaves and flowers of white or blue color;

Snow phlox (Phlox nivаlis) is a short evergreen species with pubescent stems, subulate leaves and flowers of white, pale pink, purple or fiery orange color with a dark speck in the center.

Secrets of Successfully Growing Phlox:

This rather unpretentious plant can grow in the shade, but windless and sunny areas are preferable for it, since then the flowering is more abundant. Light, fertile soil with good drainage, moderate moisture, and mild to neutral acidity is best suited for cultivation. The main components of plant care are timely watering, annual autumn soil mulching (due to the fact that the roots bulge out of the ground over time) and weed removal. Top dressing with complex fertilizers will not be superfluous: in March-April, at the end of May, during the flowering period and in late autumn. Since the stems of Phlox are very weak, tall species it is necessary to tie up. For the winter, the stems should be cut off and it is advisable to cover the plant with a small layer of dry foliage.

Seed reproduction of Phlox is used mainly for breeding purposes. In March, the seeds are sown in containers for seedlings, then a pick is carried out and in May-June the plants are planted in a permanent place in the ground at a distance of 30-50 cm.

It is easier to propagate Phlox by dividing the bush - in April-May or August-September. To do this, you should dig out a bush, carefully divide it into parts (with roots and several growth buds) and plant it with a lump of earth in a previously prepared place.

Phlox easily propagates by stem, root or leaf (with axillary bud and leaf) cuttings. Cutting is recommended at the beginning of summer. The stem is divided into parts with several leaves and rooted in a greenhouse or in a garden bed under polyethylene. The cuttings need to be watered and shaded, and after about a month they can be planted in a permanent place. The principle of obtaining a new plant from root and leaf cuttings is the same.

Possible difficulties

The most common diseases of Phlox are powdery mildew (white spots on the leaves) and phlox nematode, therefore, even without visible signs of the disease, it is necessary to treat the plant with special chemicals... Infected plants should be removed and nothing should be planted in their place for 2-3 years.

Sometimes Phlox can be attacked by the rattle virus (light spots appear on the leaves). If agricultural technology is not followed, wrinkling (leaf deformation and the appearance of spots), ring spotting (yellowing of leaves, the appearance of spots with a ring pattern), rust (brown spots on the leaves), variegation (discoloration of the leaves) can also be observed. In order to avoid these diseases, it is necessary to remove weeds in time, to prevent thickening of the plantings, to renew the plants after 3-5 years and to carry out preventive spraying with foundation in the spring.

On rare occasions, Phloxes can be attacked. spider mite or a scoop. Insecticides do a good job with these pests. But, since any disease is easier to prevent than to cure, it is better to follow the advice on agricultural techniques unswervingly, then Phloxes will delight you with their attractive and fragrant flowers throughout the summer.

Phlox varieties amaze the imagination with their diversity. They seem to be created for literally any occasion and occasion. In the catalog of phlox varieties on this page, you can find varieties for making bouquets, ground cover low-growing species, flowers for. It should be remembered that in everyday life they can have other, "folk" names, so you should still be guided not by the names of varieties, but by their appearance and detailed descriptions. Meet the varieties, choose the ones that are suitable for the flower arrangement on your site. All botanical characteristics are given in the information provided. They will help determine if a variety is suitable for certain climatic conditions.

chairman of the phlox section of the ROO club "Flower growers of Moscow", candidate of chemical sciences

Russian phlox growers have something to be proud of. In the field of phlox selection, we are, perhaps, "ahead of the rest." No wonder the Dutch are so fond of coming to our exhibitions and visiting the gardens of our breeders. Let me tell you right away how the variety differs from a seedling: only a registered seedling is called a variety. Unfortunately, at present in Russia and Moscow, few people register their seedlings. But registering a seedling and turning it into a variety is not a guarantee of phlox quality. At the same time, in our collections you can find many interesting seedlings that have stood the test of time and therefore are quite worthy of the title of the variety.

Pavel Gavrilovich Gaganov is the most famous Russian originator of phlox. Back in the pre-war 1937, he created phlox Success, who later became a popular favorite. It is difficult to find today a phlox lover who does not have this variety. Among the varieties of Pavel Gavrilovich, one more very unpretentious and therefore common variety should be noted - Olenka... This phlox can even be planted upside down, but it will still grow and bloom. Success and Olenka- two of the most suitable varieties for hobbyists starting to collect a collection of phlox.

It is to Gaganov that we owe the appearance of smoky phloxes. In 1935 he bred Smoky coral with unusual color of petals, pink with smoky dusting. In the sixties, smoky varieties such as The Dragon(1958), Dusk (1953), Ural tales(1953). In this group, one phlox is better than the other, it is difficult to single out some very best. The color of the Dragon variety is such that even an inexperienced phlox grower will never confuse this variety with any other. Each Gaganov variety has its own "face, its own flavor." Smoky phlox Uralskie tales is not inferior in popularity to the Dragon, there is something fascinating in this variety. Attention is drawn to its bright color, curled edges of the petals. Now in Holland a new phlox series is being created on its basis - Mystique Series.

Pavel Gavrilovich is the author of the first large-flowered variety with a flower size of more than 5 cm. This phlox is called Slav(1936), it has a large dense inflorescence, delicate lilac-pink color of the petals. Even in our time, there are quite a few varieties with this size of flowers.

The famous Russian breeder has many wonderful varieties Unfortunately, not all of them have survived. The brightest among them - Favorite of Gaganov, Gaganov's fire, Svyatogor... Regarding the Pet, one can say: "The spool is small, but expensive." A short, sturdy man with a dense inflorescence has a bright unique color, velvety flowers, do not fade in the sun. Look at the phlox of the great master and be sad with me that there is no such garden in Moscow where you can admire the flowering of phlox. Near Berlin there is a garden of Karl Forster, a famous German breeder who created his varieties at the same time as Gaganov. Flower lovers from all over the world go on excursions to this garden. In 1958, Pavel Gavrilovich created a new phlox and, as a sign of respect for the outstanding breeder, named it Karl Forster.

I dare to hope that we will not be sad for long. A member of our section Igor Matveev, a biologist by education, a phlox guide by vocation, became the curator of the phlox collection in Botanical Garden Moscow State University. And our section decided to help in creating a truly unique phloxarium, where there would be plots with varieties of famous breeders, with varieties - prize-winners of exhibitions of the phlox section from 1967 to 2010, with phloxes of the modern Moscow breeder Yuri Andreyevich Reprev.

Simultaneously with Gaganov in Ukraine, Ekaterina Dmitrievna Kharchenko worked in the National Botanical Garden of Kiev, her varieties New, Childhood, Apple tree color, Nikolay Shchors, Kiev festive, Taras Shevchenko loved by many connoisseurs of phlox. These are phloxes with a quality mark.

We were lucky that Yuri Andreevich Reprev, carried away by collecting phloxes, in the 60s met and met with the well-known breeders of that time P.G. Gaganov, A.P. Popov, E. D. Kharchenko. Meetings with P.G. Gaganov aroused his interest in breeding work. From his collection we obtained many domestic varieties of phlox.

You can write a poem about the varieties of Reprev, it remains only to wonder how a person, in his free time from work, created so many beautiful phloxes. This variety is widely known to lovers: raspberry Pushkin, blue-white Zhukovsky, light blue Blue joy, smoky Čiurlionis, Secret, Gray-haired lady, pink Aelitonok, Bogatyr, Katya-Katyusha, purple violet Moscow secret, lilac Russian and Sandro Botticelli, light purple Naughty and many others.

All the listed phloxes have passed the test of time and the "test of strength", they are widely represented in the collections of members of the phlox section and in the gardens of Muscovites, they are often shown at exhibitions. This is the most objective criterion for the success of a variety.

I am often asked at lectures which phlox is better, Russian or foreign. I honestly admit right away that I prefer to have in my garden Russian varieties... Most of the foreign phloxes coming to us are industrial varieties. If you need to plant a field, clearing or lawn in the park, then they are good, for this they were created, they do not large flowers, small inflorescences, strong stems, but they lack the zest. Give our soul originality and beauty at the same time. If the size, then Russian, so that the flower is more than 5 cm, if the color is not the same as everyone's, hence the appearance of smoky phlox and the priority in their creation. Remember the large-flowered varieties of Elena Alekseevna Konstantinova: Master, Olympiad, Miss Olga, Mirage, Igor Talkov, Vladimir... What foreign varieties can compare with them! A Michelle Mercier Olga Borisovna Shevlyakova! Where can you find such a bright color burning in the sun? There are no such modern foreign varieties that the color is five points and the size is larger than ours. And all because our phloxes are exclusive piece goods, and foreign ones are in-line production.

Members of our section have been actively engaged in and continue to breed new phlox. We have many beautiful, worthy seedlings with the characteristics of the variety. Many of them have stood the test of time, found wide distribution and gained fame ( Milky Way, Blue porcelain, Crown Fetisova I.V., Versace, Vision, Florence Kololenkova T.N., Heat, Kuma Kulikova E.F., Anna Maria, Hat of Monomakh, Sophia, Silver ring Khvatova V.N., Isabelle, Michelle Mercier Shevlyakova O.B.).

Have Wentz violet-lilac center and silvery-gray shading along the edge of the petals. The bush is not very tall, and the inflorescence is large, rounded-conical, as it blooms, it becomes even larger due to lateral shoots. Have a white-lilac Kumas so dense inflorescence that leaves are practically not visible. Michelle Mercier - the first beauty at the phlox flower ball. It looks especially attractive in a sunny place, where a burning purple color is visible in all its glory, which is very advantageously emphasized by an even darker center with bright yellow stamens. Vision- phlox with a quality mark. He has everything for five with a very big plus: a beautiful pink-lilac color, a dense, elongated inflorescence, large flowers and a long flowering time. Phlox Monomakh's hat really good for a number of parameters, its flowers are velvety, purple-purple, the inflorescence is large. At our phlox exhibitions, he was among the prize-winners.

Most recently, Teplova N.L. showed their first works. and the Kruglovs. Attracted the attention of pale pink Ariadne, lilac with a dark pink ring in the center Shimmering, bright reddish orange with haze Gunsmith Teplovoy N.L. Visitors of the exhibition really liked the lilac-lilac Cornflower and hot pink Vasilisa Kruglov.

But it is best to visit our phlox exhibitions and see everything with your own eyes. I invite flower lovers to admire phlox at our summer exhibitions. There you yourself can get acquainted with new and old foreign varieties, and with the achievements of the Russian breeding school and make your choice.
