In recent Soviet times, walls were primed before puttying using all sorts of available means - wallpaper glue or PVA glue diluted with water, paint with a solvent, drying oil if it was wood. Today on store shelves you can find several types of priming fluid, which differ in several categories.

How to choose a primer for walls before puttying?

To choose the right primer for putty work, you need to consider several factors:

  • what surface do you need to prime;
  • room humidity;
  • type of application - roller, brush or spray;
  • Do you have time to prepare the mixture or is it better to buy ready-made?

To treat walls for putty, you can choose universal mixture on acrylic base. For initial treatment of surfaces made of mineral materials: brick, concrete, plaster, etc. - A mineral primer composition is also suitable.

In repair shops you can find brands like Russian manufacturers(TEX, Moment, Eurolux, etc.) and trusted foreign companies (Ceresit, Tikkurila, Knauf). They differ not only construction characteristics, but above all the price tag.

For example, a regular acrylate strengthening primer for putty from the Russian company TEX can be purchased from 120-150 rubles. for 2.5 kg, and the adhesive composition from Tikkurila, designed to maximize the adhesion between the wall and the putty, will cost from 2,000 rubles for 2.5 liters. However, in fairness, it is worth noting that more expensive primer liquids have less consumption: 8-10 sq. m/kg on average.

How to apply primer?

One of important issue surface priming is a method of applying the mixture. It depends on the material on which it will lie protective layer, and also on why the wall is primed - to prevent mold, better adhesion to putty, to strengthen the old porous wall, etc. There are three main types of priming:

  • using a brush;
  • primer roller;
  • sprayer (spray).

The most common method is to coat the walls by priming with a brush. The brush easily penetrates into crevices, but this processing process is long and quite labor-intensive. In addition, the liquid mixture can flow along the wall, along the hands, which also does not add pleasant sensations to the work. It is better to use a brush on small, flat surfaces, for which one layer is enough.

A priming roller is another old tried and true tool. It is convenient, the primer liquid is applied quite quickly, but a roller is also suitable for perfectly smooth and even surfaces.

Today, renovation specialists increasingly recommend applying primer with a garden sprayer or a regular spray bottle. It is ideal for any type of wall, the composition will thus penetrate into the most problem areas(behind the battery, riser, in the corners). And most importantly, the priming process itself will be much faster and easier.

How to make a primer for putty with your own hands?

Primer for putty consists of 3 stages:

  • surface preparation;
  • room preparation;
  • direct priming.

To prime the surface, the most important thing is to thoroughly clean the wall. It is necessary to remove all traces of old wallpaper, clean the surface, and remove dirt and dust. If possible, it is better to vacuum the wall, because the residue construction dust can create a thin film, and the putty layer will subsequently crack and crumble.

Then you need to prepare the tools and the room. You will need:

  • roller, brush or spray:
  • container for priming liquid;
  • ladder;
  • gloves and safety glasses:
  • rag.

The correct primer before puttying is done quite neatly and without unnecessary dirt, so it is not necessary to tightly wrap all the furniture in the room and close the gaps between the doors. The main thing is to cover the floor with film, so as not to later wash off drips of construction fluid, and turn off the power to the room.

The third stage is priming. Apply the primer in one or several layers, moving from the floor to the ceiling. The drying speed depends on the number of layers and the type of liquid: for example, when using a quick-drying mixture, the wall will be ready for puttying after 4 hours, but the average drying time is 8-12 hours.
