It is worth noting that there are several variations of diameters, there are more complete sets with a large number of crowns, the diameters start from the smallest to the very large.

The most popular and best-selling set is 19-127 mm, this set contains 12 hole saws for wood of various diameters, it can be said to be universal, since it is almost always possible to select a crown for the desired diameter. However, its cost is 480 rubles. If you take sets with fewer attachments, then it will cost less.

Hole saw: wood and drywall no problem

Yes, yes, for drywall and wood, a hole saw of the same type is used - in appearance it resembles a thin-walled tube, at the end of which there are teeth standard for a hacksaw. Both types of these saws have some operational differences. Both crowns for drywall or wood are quite easy to use. They are installed on a drill or screwdriver and essentially work like an ordinary drill. Their design has one small nuance– the diameters of the saws are deliberately made smaller than, for example, the mounting diameter of a socket box for drywall. This is done so that the socket box fits tightly into the hole and does not wobble in it. On the other hand, if such a socket box has to be mounted in wooden wall(lining or OSB), then the hole obtained using a hole saw has to be additionally modified electric jigsaw. This point should be taken into account - perhaps cutting out a hole in the tree with a jigsaw will look much more attractive.

Hole saw set: cutting a round hole in metal

By and large, a hole saw for metal is not much different from a similar tool for wood or drywall - the main difference between them is the steel from which it is made and the shape of the tooth. You understand that metal is a strong thing, and in order to cut through it, the steel of the saw should not be inferior to it in strength. This is usually high speed steel. As for the tooth, it is small and has a special sharpening. In all other respects (in terms of appearance and design), it is still the same bit, or rather a set of bits installed on a special device, which, in turn, is installed in the chuck of a drill or screwdriver.

Almost all metal crowns have several specific aspects in their work. First, they are not designed for drilling through thick metal - as a rule, they are designed to work with thin sheet materials like galvanized steel or products made from it like metal tiles, metal siding or profiled decking. Secondly, cutting holes with such crowns should not be done at high speeds - high speed rotation of a drill or screwdriver simply burns the saw and it goes to waste. In turn, a low rotation speed is also not good - no one needs a long drilling process. This means that you need to choose average drilling modes - including feed, or rather the force that the master will apply to the tool during work.

Drill bit for concrete: features of the tool

In some ways, a concrete drill bit for a hammer drill can hardly be called a hole saw, since there is very little in common between them - except perhaps a tubular structure with a drill in the center. Instead of cutting teeth standard for a saw, such a crown is equipped with carbide pobedit tips, which are able to withstand both friction and the impact created by a hammer drill. There is no need to talk about sets here, since for different hole diameters you have to purchase a separate tool of this type.

A bit for drilling holes in concrete, despite its power and ability to crush concrete walls, is not able to withstand reinforcement. When it hits the reinforcement, which happens almost every time during the drilling process, its soldering tips fly off and, by and large, the expensive tool becomes hopelessly damaged. I don’t want to say that this is a completely useless tool - you just need to understand that in the process of work, when you get to the reinforcement, the crown should be removed and instead, a regular pick should be installed on the hammer drill, with which you can complete the job you started. Subsequently, the reinforcement can either be bent with a hammer or cut with a grinder.

Compound hole saw: diamond version

A diamond hole saw could be called universal if it really could handle all kinds of materials. But this is not true - it is intended exclusively for cutting steel and concrete. Wood, drywall and many others soft materials clog the edges of the diamonds, as a result of which they lose their ability to cut even metal and concrete - a paradox, but the same thing happens when using diamond bits to cut holes in asbestos, slate and aerated concrete. Diamond crowns They are sold in stores in sets - exactly the same as hole saws for wood and drywall. That is, a large washer with a drill in the middle (the drill in such bits is tipped) and about seven or eight interchangeable hole saws.

The diamond hole saw also has some special features in operation.

    First of all, these are the same average speeds - a high rotation speed of the hole saw leads to rapid wear of the diamond edge. To be more precise, it is better to cut with such bits at low speeds.

    The second point concerns working with concrete. Diamond does its job better if the surface being cut is moistened with water. For metal this point is not relevant.

    Often, diamond-cut crowns are used to drill holes in ceramic tiles - by and large, this is the only normal tool, through which you can make neat round holes in the tiles. When working with this material, it is necessary to take into account its fragility - to prevent the tile from splitting, it is necessary to drill it from both sides. First from the front side, and then, when the enamel is sawn through, you need to move to the wrong side.

By and large, cutting each material with a diamond hole saw has its own subtleties and nuances. For example, if we talk about concrete, or rather reinforced concrete, here we can note the following point: with proper cutting, the reinforcement of such structures is not a problem for the saw. It goes through it easily if you increase the speed a little and stop using water during the drilling process. Once the reinforcement has been passed, water can be added again to the work process.

And to conclude the topic of what a hole saw is, there is only one thing left to add - endlessly deep hole You won't be able to drill with this tool. As a rule, the drilling depth is limited by the length of the bit, which is the disadvantage of this tool - it is not designed for equipment through holes in the walls. If you need to break through a thick wall, then it is better to turn your attention towards a tubular drill.

The carbide tip hole saw is used for cutting round holes in tile, stone, cement slab etc., and is necessary when laying tiles around water taps and pipes, as well as for cutting tiles laid around the corners of the sink. This tool cuts both soft and hard tiles, although cutting glazed tiles is quite slow.

The hole saw is secured in an electric drill using a chuck, into which a 6 mm diameter center drill with a carbide tip is also inserted. You can saw dry, but if you drill a hole in a separate, unsecured tile, it breaks easily. The reason is that the hole saw cuts rather slowly and causes the tile chips and dust to heat up and collect around the hole being cut. (Thermal shock is not a problem with other saws. Unfortunately, immediate proximity to water and electricity can be dangerous. Battery-powered tools do not pose the same dangers as electric tools, powered from the mains, but in most cases do not have enough power and rotation speed necessary to obtain even, smooth cuts on tiles or stones. (If you choose to use a battery-powered drill, be sure that the power source, consisting of batteries, will quickly discharge, since drilling holes requires a lot of electricity).

The solution to the problem is to connect your power tools, which you constantly use, to protective device shutdown (RCD), which automatically disconnects tools from the power supply in the event of a leak. You can plug into an existing grounded outlet or buy or rent portable version RCD.

To hold the tiles while cutting, make a plywood box slightly larger than more tiles and isolate the corners. It is better to fill the box with water so that the tiles are covered with a layer of water of about 5-6 mm. Before immersing the tile, lightly tap the center of the tile with a punch to create a puncture in the enamel and prevent the center drill from slipping. Then press the tile into place with the drill bit in the center and turn the drill on at normal speed. As soon as the drill passes through the tile, the hole saw is lowered onto the surface of the tile and then the drill speed should be reduced.

While cutting, try not to press too hard on the saw, as this may cause the tiles to crack. .Allow the hole saw to guide itself into the tile.
