Repairing the end of the zipper. How to repair different parts of a zipper with your own hands and the necessary tools. What to do if the lightning gets stuck

Obviously, the zipper type fastener is known to everyone and is very popular in all its applications and manifestations.

These are clothes and shoes, bags and cases, and a lot of other equally useful things. Do you know what underlies its operating principle?

Few people know that the idea for its implementation was given to the world by an ordinary bird. More precisely, a bird's feather. Even more precisely, the principle of connecting the elements of the pen into a single plane. This is an alternating interlocking of feather fibers, ultimately forming a single whole.
The same thing happens in ordinary “lightning”. When it is fastened, the elements of one edge engage with the elements of the other edge using a lock or, in other words, a “slider”.

The elements can be plastic or metal staples or teeth, one end attached to a strip of fabric. Plastic version can be cast (called “tractor”) or twisted (“spiral”).

The weakest link of this entire fastening device is usually the lock, or “slider”. Its malfunction can manifest itself in the breakdown of the “tongue” - the device that we pinch with our fingers. The mechanism that holds the slider closed may break, and then it will come unfastened. In addition, the malfunction can manifest itself in the divergence of the halves of the zipper when trying to fasten it. In the latter case, many advise pressing the halves of the lock closer to each other.

Repairing a zipper by pressing the slider

First, you can try to tighten the lock without removing the slider.

Find pliers, you can use wire cutters, or even a hammer

Find the place on the clasp where inner space empty, not where the partition is. This is the part closer to the bottom of the jacket, as a rule.

Try to squeeze this edge with pliers until the upper and lower walls touch each other.

When you release the pliers, you will see that the edges will again move away a certain distance, but less.

Try checking the zipper fastening, if it starts to fasten, then everything is fine...

If the zipper is still not fastened very well, then you will have to remove the slider...

To remove a faulty lock, you must remove the stopper on one or both halves of the fasteners. On one - if the zipper has a detachable connection at the bottom. The limiter is most often a metal bracket that prevents the “dog” from jumping out of the serrated tape.

This staple will need to be carefully bent using an awl or a thin screwdriver and completely removed from the strip of zipper base fabric.

After the limiter is removed, the slider is removed through the top of the zipper. We see that it is really distorted and therefore the lightning does not work...

We clamp the slider with pliers and correct its curvature.

Press on one side and the other

The corrected slider is placed on a zipper

We put the limiter in place

And clamp it with pliers.

Checking to see if the zipper is fastened...

It happens that there is no limiter on the zipper, and the limiter is the bend of the fastener fabric followed by stitching. In this case, the edge needs to be trimmed. If this is difficult to do, then you can proceed as follows:

We will need small pliers (or manicure tongs, or a flat-head screwdriver) and large pliers

Insert the flat end of a tool (screwdriver, for example) under the clamp of the slider and slightly press it out,

So that it can be easily removed from the zipper.

Insert the pliers into the slider as shown here to widen it a little.

Just don't overdo it, or you'll completely break it.

Then we insert the zipper slider again...

And then use small pliers or nail clippers to gently press the sides

After such manipulations, the castle simply has to work :o)

Replacing the zipper slider

Pressing the lock, of course, is useful...
But such resuscitation can be carried out only once; the castle will not withstand any more and will completely fall apart. Therefore, if you managed to save your zipper once, then try to prepare a spare slider - just in case of a fire.

It is possible to qualitatively repair such a fastener on clothing or shoes without completely replacing it, only by replacing the entire lock. Even on a high-quality fastener, it fails first, since constant physical force is applied to it, and its area is relatively small compared to the area of all the teeth.

To determine which lock you need to purchase, you need to know several parameters. Sliders have different sizes- most often they are applied to the back of the clamp.

  • U metal sizes vary from 3 to 10 or more. WITH reverse side The slider is shaped like a triangle.
  • The reverse side of the tractor zipper slider has the shape of a trefoil or an oval, and is designated No. 3 onwards.
  • For twisted lightning, the slider shape is only oval, numbers from 3 onwards.

The letter designations that are stamped next to the numbers indicate the following:

  • X - one-piece zipper, cast, 2 locks;
  • L - the clasp does not open, lock 1;
  • H - one-piece zipper, 2 locks;
  • D - the clasp opens completely, 2 locks with 2 connectors;
  • A - lock without connector;
  • B - connector with 1 lock;
  • C - connector, 2 locks.

How to distinguish between sliders:

Also determine the type of lock: it can be

  • automatic - a mechanism inside the pawl prevents the teeth from diverging in any position of its tongue;
  • semi-automatic - unfastening is possible only with the “tongue” raised - after the zipper is fastened, you need to secure a special stopper; when the puller is raised, the lock will open;
  • haberdashery - when the zipper teeth are not blocked and there is no stopper in the mechanism.

It must be remembered that the sliders change on metal and plastic zippers outerwear. On trousers and skirts, replacing the dog due to its specificity is impossible.
The zipper opens and the slider remains on one half of the zipper. The upper limiter is carefully removed using a screwdriver and pliers. If the edge of the zipper next to the stopper is very close to the fabric, you will need to trim it a little (this is rare).
You need to try to fasten the zipper itself. After that without special effort completely remove the lock from the side of the removed stops. Install the new lock in place of the old one, tucking the edges of the guide tape into the pawl grooves. After the lock is installed, use pliers to clamp the metal stops into place or sew on the torn fabric.

The best way to install the correct slider when buying a new one is to have a sample of the old one. To install it you will need side cutters. And also “limiters” for the slider so that it does not fly off at the top of the zipper. They are also sold in sewing stores. If you are unlucky enough to purchase “stoppers,” you can remove them from an old metal zipper, for example, from jeans.

Use side cutters to “bite” the plastic stopper at the top of the zipper (remove the metal stopper with a screwdriver)

And take it off. On the other side, do the same.

Here the sliders are shown to have the same shape. Colored runners are not sold in our sewing stores, so we will limit ourselves to what we have.

Now carefully put on the slider, slightly rocking it up and down.

Put a metal one in place where there was a plastic stopper.

And carefully clamp with side cutters. On the other side, do the same.

The slider can be replaced effortlessly and at home.

Repairing a zipper: Teeth

Have the teeth on your zipper fallen out and you don't know what to do with it?

If the item can still serve, then you need to start repairing it. I suggest about

learn about interesting methods for repairing zippers.

It is very unpleasant when one tooth in a zipper breaks. Let's try to fix it...

We will need a cotton swab, needles and thread.

It is necessary to carefully remove the locking mechanism (slider) from the fastener.

If this is not possible, then simply move the lock further away from the accident site.

Take a cotton swab, cut off a part of the stem 2.5 mm long from the stick, cut it along the entire length

We put plastic (from a cotton swab) in place of the broken clove

To restore the movement of the slider, you need to create the effect of the presence of all the teeth, which is what we did

We secure our new clove with a needle and thread, stitching through the plastic

Check how the lock works. If it easily passes along the zipper, then you can then secure the structure (plastic + threads) using super glue and let it dry.

Consider a case where several teeth flew out of a zipper. Usually in such cases you can simply replace the zipper, since nowadays there is no particular shortage of fittings. But if it’s difficult to do it yourself, and it’s expensive to send the item to a workshop, we’ll try to repair the zipper with our own hands.

To do this you will need to purchase a small donor zipper ( the right size teeth - suitable not only in height and width, but also in thickness).
We pick out the teeth from the “donor” - they are slightly glued/welded there, but can be removed quite easily

To place the tooth on the zipper, use a strip of copper foil (#0.1mm)

Open the legs of the clove with an awl and place them on the foil.

Then simply slide the clove off the foil and onto the fabric. To secure the teeth, sew several stitches between them with a relatively thick thread - back and forth.

That's all, actually. The lock works fine!

If one or two teeth have fallen out of a nylon zipper, you can restore its functionality using a bandage by stitching the damaged area with fishing line turn to turn.

In the missing area, sew the missing teeth with fishing line, threading the needle into the same place several times in a row until the necessary parts are formed.

If the tips for correcting the zipper did not help you, then you should contact the nearest workshop, where they will replace the old fastener with a new one.

Helpful Tips:

  • If the metal zipper comes apart, don't rush to replace it. It is necessary to forge it along the entire length from the inside and outside with gentle blows of a hammer, making 2-3 passes. Then slightly reduce the gap between the top and bottom of the lock. This must be done carefully so as not to break the lock.

  • A zipper will last much longer if its textile part is impregnated with BF-6 glue. An already worn zipper can be repaired in the same way.

  • To make the work of a metal zipper easier, sometimes it is enough to simply run the lead of a soft pencil over it several times - the graphite will act well as a lubricant.

  • The zipper sometimes has to be cut off. To prevent the slider from bouncing after this, you can use a paper clip from a school notebook as a travel limiter.

  • To prevent the zipper on winter boots from coming undone, we recommend securing the zipper tongue with a small hook. The hook (from a dress, skirt) needs to be slightly bent and sewn to the side of the lock track.

  • Plastic zippers on shoes sometimes begin to come apart on their own. To restore their functionality, we recommend doing this: unzip the zipper, moisten its teeth with a solution of rosin in alcohol (soldering flux) and let it dry for two hours. The clasp will work reliably. Over time, the operation can be repeated.

  • We offer a method for fastening the teeth of a plastic zipper that have come off the fabric base. To do this, using a needle and nylon thread, each tooth is sewn to the base.

  • If the zipper comes off the fabric base, it can be sewn on using a machine needle. This method is especially convenient for repairs in hard to reach places, for example in shoes, since the puncture with a needle is done only on one side.

And a very good video

A zipper is a fastener that is found on many types of clothing and is also used on shoes, bedding and bags. Sooner or later, everyone faces problems with their locks. Whether the lock has been used for a long time, an initially low-quality product, or problems that can be solved - we will figure out the cause of the breakdown and how to solve it.

Before you begin repairs, you should find out what the key problem is. Perhaps it can be solved at home without the cost of professional repair. Among the most common causes of lightning failure:

  • a weak slider that cannot connect the lock teeth together, causing the zipper to come apart;
  • the slider is too tight, causing the zipper to jam and not fasten or fasten too tightly;
  • divergence of the zipper after fastening. Just as in the first case, the problem lies in the weakness of the slider.

How to fix a zipper depending on the cause of the breakdown

All of the listed problems with the lock can be solved at home and do not require complete replacement castle Repairs may require pliers, lock lubricant, a slider, and paraffin.

Attention!

In addition to the fact that the slider can be purchased in specialized stores, it can also be removed from unnecessary old locks or clothing. Focus on the required size.

What to do if the lightning gets stuck

If the zipper jams, stops moving, or breaks the lock teeth, then the reason may be high friction. The issue can be easily resolved - the lock needs to be lubricated. In specialized stores you can purchase lubricant designed specifically for runners. If this is not possible, then you can use any means at hand, for example, a piece of unsalted lard or paraffin. Paraffin does not leave the same residue as lard, so it is preferable.

  1. Rub the zipper while closed with a piece of paraffin, being careful not to damage the teeth.
  2. Fasten and unfasten the lock several times.
  3. Remove excess paraffin with a napkin.

After these actions, the lightning will not jam and will last for a long time.

What to do if the zipper on your jacket comes apart

The problem with a weak slider is the easiest to solve and does not require replacing the zipper. Straighten the zipper and try to fasten it. Ideally, the slider should move smoothly, without effort. If the zipper comes apart, try lightly pressing the slider with pliers; if this does not help, then increase the pressure.

Important!

If you press the slider too hard, then all you have to do is throw the zipper away. Therefore, move carefully, step by step, increasing the pressure.

What to do if the base of the zipper is broken

If Bottom part If the lock is broken to such an extent that it seems shaggy, then it is better to replace it - such a lock will definitely not last long. However, you can extend the life of the base of the lock, which is especially important if you currently do not have the time or opportunity to change the lock. For this we need a simple nail polish; it is better to choose a colorless one or one that matches the color of the lock. Unfasten the lock and carefully reattach the torn parts, then apply nail polish to them. Please note that it is impossible to get by with just one layer; the varnish must saturate the lock well and, when dry, tightly glue the broken parts together. Dry the lock thoroughly before use.

Note!

If the option with nail polish is not very attractive to you, then you can use superglue in a similar way.

How to replace a zipper slider on a jacket

If all else fails, then the only option is to replace the slider. You can either buy a dog or remove it from any old thing, the main thing is that it is the same size as the previous slider. Procedure:

  1. Remove the broken slider. Be careful - the teeth break easily - first lift one part of the pawl, then release the second.
  2. Open the edges of the new pawl in the same way, but do not overdo it so as not to break it. You can use a thick needle or scissors.
  3. Place the pawl on the lock and gently press it with pliers.

Carefully!

Pressing too hard can break the pawl, while too little will cause the lock to constantly come apart. Proceed with caution.

After installing the new slider, open and close the lock several times, making sure that the pawl moves smoothly and that the lock does not come apart.

How to fix a zipper if it comes apart?

Lightning - small and incredible useful element, to which all people have long been accustomed. Few people attach importance to it. And few people think about the fact that we use it almost every day. It is present on jackets, on coats and sheepskin coats, on sweaters, on jeans, on pants, on trousers and shorts, on skirts and dresses, on shoes, on boots and other shoes, on a backpack, on a briefcase, on a bag, on a wallet , on a pencil case and various accessories. In many cases, a zipper is more convenient than snaps and buttons. It can be made in black, brown, red and any other color. The snake can be iron or plastic and have different lengths and shapes.

Sometimes it happens that these miniature assistants break down. Often this happens at the most inopportune moment. The most common problems encountered are:

  • the zipper is not fastened;
  • separated;
  • came off from the base;
  • does not hold on the end;
  • goes away;
  • the teeth fell out.

What to do when there is no time to replace the zipper or take the item to the studio for repairs? In this article you will learn how to fix a zipper yourself at home.

Even if the zipper is not broken, but just sometimes comes apart, it is better to fix it right away before it completely stops fastening.

How to fix a zipper on a jacket?

There are several effective and effective ways that will help you quickly fix a broken zipper on outerwear:

  1. Take clear nail polish and apply it on the frayed part of the jacket. Do this until the varnish completely saturates the material and the fastening of the snake becomes more rigid. This method is quite fast and simple. But he doesn't fix the lightning for long.
  2. The same procedure can be done using quick-hardening glue. In this case, you need to be very careful and careful, because the glue hardens very quickly. It must be applied to the damaged area of the zipper in very small portions. This will allow the zipper to remain in working condition for as long as possible. This method is considered more effective than the varnish method.

If the zipper is not broken, but simply comes apart, do not rush to change it. Can it be repaired? Of course you can. And even necessary. To do this you need to use pliers. Lightly press the bottom and top of the zipper slider. This will help the lightning stop spreading.

This operation can be performed only once. If the zipper opens again, the slider will have to be replaced.

What to do if the tractor zipper breaks? You can also replace the pawl at home. Use pliers or wire cutters to remove the plastic fastener. Remove the dog and pick up a new one in the store (it’s better to take the old slider with you so that the new one fits exactly).

The bartack can be taken from an old jacket. Or from a short zipper bought at a craft store. It must be removed very carefully - carefully unbending the petals. A small screwdriver or awl will help you with this. A metal fastener must be used. Pinch it with pliers on the tractor zipper. Move it as far as possible from the edge of the lena so that the dog does not slip through.

How to fix a zipper dog?

Sometimes something unpleasant happens - we put on our favorite thing and find that the lock is broken. What to do? Change clothes and postpone repairs? Or quickly carry the item to the studio? As you know, replacing a zipper is not cheap. In addition, the repair shop will take several days to complete. And you don’t always have extra time. And I don’t want to spend it on a studio.

If the slider falls off, don't panic. This problem is very easy to solve. You can replace the dog at home. This is possible if the teeth have not pulled out. Otherwise, the zipper will still need to be replaced.

You will need:

  • slider (zipper dog);
  • pliers;
  • upper and lower limiters;
  • ruler.

The first thing to do is buy new dog. If the old one that came off is not damaged, you can put it back on, but it is better to replace it.

When purchasing, make sure the new slider is the same shape and size as the old one, and that it fits the type of zipper that broke. If you don't want to bother, buy a ready-made zipper and use the pawl from there. Such option will do and in the event that it is necessary to replace the stoppers in the lock. Otherwise you will have to purchase these elements separately. Short snakes are quite cheap, the purchase will not hurt your pocket.

After purchasing the dog, the zipper at the bottom must be exposed. To do this, you need to remove a few cloves using nippers. Remove them gradually - one thing at a time. Continue doing this until you have exposed two centimeters of woven tape on both halves of the snake.

Ideally, you want to remove as few teeth as possible. If the dog is small, it is recommended to expose 3-4 centimeters. Before you begin removing the teeth, pay attention to the condition of the snake. If it is open, it needs to be exposed not only at the bottom, but also at the top.

Make sure you expose both sides of the snake equally. If this is not the case, you will not be able to return the dog.

Place the dog on the zipper. Its direction may be different. It depends on whether the lock was open or closed when the slider jumped out of it.

If the zipper was unzipped, put the slider on with a split hole so that the hole on the back side faces away from the zipper. If the zipper is closed, put the tab on with the joint opening. Split side with opposite side should look in the direction away from the lightning.

Pull the fabric halves of the snake above the slider. With minimal use of force, the pawl will move from the fabric to the lock teeth. Pull the halves until you hear a characteristic click-like sound. It will signal that the slider is in place.

After final installation dogs, check if the updated zipper works. Try moving the slider down and up a few times to check its operation. Once the pawl is in place, it will zip up and unzip with ease. If it moves slowly or does not move at all, you need to reinstall it.

You need to check the functionality carefully so as not to accidentally remove the pawl. After all, we have not yet installed the lower and upper stoppers. Before installing them, think about which ones are more suitable for you - lower or upper ones.

After removing the part, it is necessary to limit the exposed area of the zipper with stoppers so that the slider does not fly off again. Most often, the upper stops are small size. They are separately attached to each of the halves of the lock. They do not interfere with fastening and unfastening the zipper at the upper end. The lower fastener is larger. He has square shape and is attached immediately to two halves of a one-piece zipper over the gap to prevent the pawl from flying off. It fixes the tip of the lock in the closed position. It covers the exposed area from which the teeth have been removed.

You will need pliers to install the top stops. Place one of the stops over the topmost tooth on one of the lock halves. To do this, open the clasp a little. Secure the stopper by clamping it with pliers. Make sure it is securely fastened. Repeat the procedure with the second stopper.

If you want to install a bottom stop, close the zipper. Insert the mounting pins into the fabric of both halves of the lock. The stopper should be located above the lowest teeth (of those remaining after replacing the pawl). After installation, turn the item inside out. Using pliers, clamp the mounting pins until they are flat. They must be pressed tightly against the snake, otherwise they will scratch the body or cling to clothing. Lightning is ready!

How to fix a metal zipper?

The methods described above are suitable for repairing both plastic and iron zippers. In any case, your most faithful assistant will be pliers. They will help out if the zipper comes apart, unfastens on its own, or, conversely, does not fasten. If the clamp does not help, most likely the lock already needs to be changed. But this can also be done at home. The main thing is desire and a little cunning!
