How to Skeleton Leaves

Leaf skeletons, due to their lightness and transparency, look very impressive as decoration. To achieve this effect, you need to resort to a special technique - skeletonization.

What you will need:

• any fresh leaves;
• soda;
• egg dye;
• small container - ladle or pan;
• Toothbrush;
• paper napkins.

How to make skeletonized leaves:

1. Mix soda and water in proportions of 1 to 4 and place the leaves in the prepared solution so that they are completely hidden by water.
2. Bring the mixture to a boil and leave to simmer for 30 minutes.
3. Remove the pan from the stove and remove the leaves, carefully placing them on the table with the glossy side up.
4. Remove excess moisture using napkins.
5. Clean the pulp from the leaf with a brush (this must be done very carefully, the leaves are quite fragile).
6. Rinse the skeleton under water and then paint it the desired color.
7. Leave the painted skeletonized leaves to dry.

The resulting material is ready for use.

Bouquet of flowers from leaves

A bouquet is the simplest thing that can be made from leaves, and it is worth starting with it if the child has not previously done such crafts. To make a craft in the form of a home bouquet, it is not necessary to use real flowers, dry them, etc. Buds can be made from colorful leaves collected during a walk. Involve children in every step of the process, creating a real creative workshop.

What you will need to make the craft:

• maple leaves (fresh) with stems;
• spool of strong thread.

To make a bud from maple leaves, you will need to perform several actions:

1. First take one sheet and fold it with the glossy side out.
2. Roll the leaf into a tube.
3. Fold the next sheet in half and wrap it around the tube.
4. Continue wrapping the leaves around the bud until the flower is quite full.
5. Wrap a thread around the base of the bud to prevent the flower from falling apart.

Using this method, you can make any number of flowers, which are then simply collected into a bouquet.

Topiaries can be made from the most different materials. You can often find crafts made from coffee, banknotes, sweets, hearts, etc. This version of topiary involves the use of maple leaves.

So, what is needed for topiary:

• pot;
• wooden stick for the trunk;
• a foam or foam ball as a base;
• gypsum;
• dye;
• hot glue;
• elements for decoration.

The procedure for creating an autumn topiary looks like this:

D Good afternoon, my dear friends!

Today, I share with you my new experience in needlework. It will be a picture of autumn leaves, I wanted to call it: girl - autumn. Actually, I didn't plan to do this job. But, at work, there was an annual crafts competition, from autumn materials. The manager asked me to make some kind of craft from natural materials. As a boss, would you refuse a request? And I wasn’t going to refuse this request, it’s handicraft! And I really like handicrafts. This is what I ended up with.

For work I took:

• Fibreboard – 50 x 40 cm;
• Natural materials - ears of wheat, a bunch of autumn leaves, twigs, acorns, rowan berries, flowers, grass, millet;
• PVA glue;
• Acrylic matte varnish;
• Acrylic paints - gold, bronze and white;
• Watercolor paint – yellow.

As a basis for the picture, I took a piece of fiberboard measuring 40 x 50 cm. For the front side of the picture, I chose the back side of the fiberboard, i.e. not smooth))) There was a scratch right in the middle, but it doesn’t matter, I’ll decorate it.

I decided to decorate the picture frame using the terra technique. For this, I needed a mixture into which I would press ears of wheat and millet. Usually putty is used for this, and I was sure that I had it. But during the whole break, I didn’t find it, it turned out that it was over, but I didn’t want to go to the store... But I had dry glue for tiles and I decided to experiment. Let the glue be the basis of the mixture. I needed to get a medium-thick mass into which wheat and millet could be pressed. In this case, the mixture should eventually harden and stick firmly to the frame. And I did this, mixed: tile glue (6 parts) + flour (3 parts) + PVA glue. I actually used PVA instead of water. That is, as soon as the mass became the consistency I needed, I stopped adding it.

First, I generously coated the canvas with PVA glue along the entire perimeter, in the place of the future frame. After letting the PVA dry a little, I began to apply the experimental mass, in a layer of about 1 cm, in advance.

And she immediately began to press ears of wheat into this mass, and then sprinkled it generously with millet. She pressed everything in, so that the wheat and millet were pressed in, but at the same time were clearly visible.

Then, she put the picture on its edge and shook off the excess millet.

After about 30 minutes, I mixed PVA glue and acrylic varnish in equal proportions and covered the wheat and millet with this composition. When you apply this composition, it white, but becomes transparent after drying.

When the mixture of glue and varnish had dried, I painted the frame liberally with gold paint. Painted wide brush. And after drying, I went over the ears of wheat with bronze paint.

Now, finally, the picture itself of autumn leaves. I want to say right away: I am not friendly with drawing, and especially with painting with paints! I painted it as I thought.))) White acrylic paint, cast in separate container and dilute it lightly with water, so the paint can be applied more evenly. Then, I painted the surface of the fiberboard (without touching the frame). Thus, I prepared the canvas by lightly priming it. By the way, in the end, it looked like the painting was made on canvas. Once the white paint had dried, I began painting the background of the painting. I made all the strokes smooth, semicircular or something (I don’t know what artists call it). In the middle, closer to the top, I painted it with white paint again. Then she began to darken the background, bringing it closer to the edges. To do this, I gradually began to add gold to the container with white acrylic paint. The further to the edges, the more gold I added, making the tone darker.

After looking at the result, I wanted to add a yellow tone. I didn’t have yellow acrylic paint, so I took watercolor paints. Mixing white and yellow watercolor paints, I went right behind the edge of the white background. That's it, I put the painting aside until the paints were completely dry.

For this work, I collected a few different autumn leaves, thin birch branches, and grass. Also, twigs with rowan berries, acorns, flowers from narwhal flower beds (luckily they weren’t fined))). But my husband found the highlight for me. While helping to collect acorns, I found a sleeping dragonfly (it’s good that it was no longer alive).

I placed the leaves and flower petals between the pages of the books, so they stayed with me for about two days. I had them in my work, only slightly dried out.

But first, I drew a silhouette of a girl on paper (I found it on the internet) and applied it to the picture to determine the size.

Then she cut off the skirt and painted the girl with gold paint. It could have been acrylic, but I had aerosol gold paint))). From the waist, I cut off a small pointed piece, these will be eyelashes.

Then, she glued the girl to the place that she had decided on in advance. I didn’t take pictures of my further steps, because... I'll tell you in words.

She formed a wreath for the girl from grass, leaves and twigs with rowan berries. Everything was glued using a mixture of PVA glue and acrylic varnish (in proportions 1/1). In the future I used this composition. Let me explain why I used exactly this composition. Before I started making the painting, I scoured the Internet in search of how to preserve the color of autumn leaves. And I found information that the color and elasticity of autumn leaves can be preserved, including with the help of this composition. Other options did not suit me (I won’t write about them).

I continue. The skirt was made from leaves. I glued it in rows, starting from the hem, going higher.

The bodice of the dress was made from flower petals.

Since, initially, there was a scratch on the fiberboard, I glued a twig with leaves in its place. And she glued the dragonfly, spreading its wings. I really liked this dragonfly.

On both sides of the girl, I glued twigs and leaves, trying to imitate trees. I started gluing from the top level, then, going lower, I glued the next branches and leaves.

And in the lower left corner I glued panicles, small twigs of flowers and a few acorns.

And further! While examining the work, I discovered that there were unpainted areas on the frame. Therefore, I once again went over the frame with gold paint.

Then, I went over all the leaves, twigs and flowers again with a mixture of glue and varnish.

That's all. My painting of autumn leaves is ready. Of course, this is most likely not a painting, but a panel... But let it be a painting, I really want it)))

The first technique (my favorite) that I want to show you is that autumn leaves are used as puzzles in one whole mosaic. By arranging them in a certain order we can get an image, for example, of a crab (photo below).

Moreover, if you look closely at the photo below, you will notice that the leaves on this mosaic canvas cut with scissors to give them the desired shape.

The only difficulty in creating such a crab applique is that (as you noticed) - it is SYMMETRICAL - the same on the left and on the right. This requires that your hardwood material contains identical pairs of leaves– and for this you need to tinker with the selection of material. As with the butterfly applique in the photo below.

But what a miracle can be made from autumn leaves and dry fern stems. Take a closer look - there is also zone of symmetrical leaf laying - in the abdomen area seahorse. The remaining leaves are laid out according to the laws of harmony and proportion.

Application of leaves ON CARDBOARD.

The most popular theme of such applications made of leaves and cardboard is, of course, hedgehogs.

And also owls. We draw the outlines of an owl on the cardboard... paste it with leaves - starting from the bottom row of leaves, and moving upwards, overlapping. You can fill the entire owl with leafy mass, or you can leave the paws and head without leaves, just cover these areas with gouache.

Or you can make owl appliqués - like in the photo below. Here cut out a regular circle from cardboard... glue it leaves-wings... we make two eyes and a beak from cardboard... ears and paws from pieces of sharp leaves. And then when the owl is ready glue a regular clothespin onto the back of the cardboard(with glue or tape) ... and we sit and pin our owls on a tree branch.

Here is another way to make an applique using cardboard. First we apply the drawing to the cardboard - then we transfer this drawing from reverse side cardboards. Painting “Autumn Girl”

Necessary materials

• Fiberboard measuring 50x40 centimeters;
• PVA glue;
• Acrylic varnish (best matte);
• Acrylic paints (in our example we used gold, white, bronze);
• Yellow watercolor paint;
• Wide brush;
• Decorative materials for decorating the canvas: ears of wheat, autumn leaves, twigs, acorns, herbs, rowan or viburnum berries, etc.

Step-by-step instruction

Helpful tip: Before making a picture of autumn leaves, you need to dry them. To do this, place a few leaves between the pages of the book and leave them there for several days. This way they will dry faster and remain perfectly smooth.

1. Use a fiberboard sheet as a base. Make the front side of the painting on its rough side.
2. Mix dry glue with water to form a thick mass that will be easy to attach to. necessary materials. The solution can also be prepared in this way: mix dry glue with flour in a ratio of 6 to 3 and add a little PVA glue.
3. When the mixture reaches the viscous consistency we need, mix everything well and apply to the frame.
4. Generously coat the canvas with PVA glue along the entire perimeter of the frame. Let it dry a little. Then apply the pre-prepared mass on top (the layer thickness should be approximately 1 centimeter).
5. Immediately place ears of wheat on top of it and sprinkle with millet. Press them in as tightly as possible, but so that they remain on the surface.
6. Then lift the painting and gently shake off any excess grain.
7. After half an hour, mix PVA glue and acrylic varnish (in a ratio of 1 to 1), cover the ears and millet with the resulting mixture. Immediately after application, the color of the composition will be white, but after drying it will turn transparent.
8. After the glue and varnish are completely dry, paint the frame with gold paint. To do this, use a wide brush. Next, paint the spikelets with bronze paint.
9. Pour some white acrylic paint into a small container and add water. This way the paint will go on more evenly.
10. Also paint the surface of the fiberboard. Do this very carefully so as not to touch the frame. Your fiberboard sheet will look like a canvas.
11. Once the paint has dried a little, begin applying the background.
12. Make all strokes smooth. Paint the middle, closer to the top, with white paint.
13. Next, start darkening the background. The middle should be slightly lighter than the main tone of the canvas. The closer you move to the edges (the frame of the painting), the darker the base color. To do this, after coloring the center, pour in white paint a little golden.
14. Then add some yellow tone. Take yellow watercolor paint, first lightly mixing it with white so that it is not too bright, and paint over the white background a little. Set the workpiece aside until completely dry.
15. For decoration in our example, we used various autumn leaves, thin birch branches and various dry herbs. You may also need rowan berries, some acorns and flowers.
16. Take the already dried painting blank and start decorating it. Draw a silhouette of a girl on a landscape sheet. If you don't know how to draw, you can find finished sample. Cut it along the outline.
17. Next, cut the skirt from the outline and color it top part female silhouette in gold color. You can use the same paint that was used to paint the base. Cut several small strips from the remaining paper. These will be eyelashes.
18. Glue the top part of the workpiece onto the canvas. Then form a wreath of grass, leaves and rowan berries on the girl’s head. To fix it on the canvas, mix PVA glue and acrylic paint in a 1:1 ratio. You will use this mixture to attach other parts in the future.
19. Using the previously prepared layout, make a girl’s skirt from leaves. Glue them in rows, starting from the hem and going up.
20. Attach several branches with leaves near the girl’s hands. You can also use additional decorative elements.
21. Glue branches and leaves on both sides of the girl, laying them out in the shape of a tree. Glue them from the top level, gradually moving down.
22. In the lower left corner of the picture, glue several leaves, blades of grass, small flowers and acorns there.
23. If there is more left in the picture free place, you can fill it in the same way or simply paint it with gold paint.
24. After finishing the work, paint the entire picture with a mixture of varnish and glue. This will make it more voluminous and shiny.

Large maple leaf

What do you need for work?

• A sheet of plywood or thick cardboard;
• Pencil;
• Maple leaves;
• PVA glue;
• Brush or sponge.

Stages

1. Take a small sheet of plywood or thick cardboard and draw on it with a simple pencil outline of a maple leaf.
2. Prepare the collected autumn leaves. You can dry them in a book. This will take several days. You can also use more in a fast way drying: place the leaves on parchment and place in the oven for 5-10 minutes, preheated to approximately 120°C.
3. Place the dry sheets along the contour of the drawing on the plywood, gradually filling the entire sketch. Next, grease each of them with PVA glue and secure it to the base of the picture. Set the workpiece aside until completely dry.
4. Please note that after the glue has completely dried, the sheets will become very hard. If there are any excess edges left, you can carefully trim them with nail scissors.
5. Glue the dry blank to a sheet of plywood or cardboard. To make it stick better, use superglue.
6. To make the stem for our large decorative leaf, take a straight twig and also attach it with superglue.
