DIY mosquito net made from cable channels

Spring has come, and with it mosquitoes. The balcony has an aluminum sliding window. There was no mosquito net for it, so I wanted to buy a factory one, but after learning the price, I refused and decided to make a homemade one.

Let's get started.

We buy in the store a cable channel 25*16-3pcs, 2m each, 15*10-1pc, rivets, mesh and corners. We take the corners in such a way that they can be easily inserted into the cable channel. I only found these:

But after trying them on at home, it seemed to me that the design would be a little flimsy. Therefore, at work, corners were made from fiberglass along the width of the cable channel.

Rivets and the rivet maker himself.

So... we decide on the dimensions of the future frame and begin to cut the cable channel at 45 degrees. In order not to spoil the chair, which is also a temporary workbench))), I used a 20*20mm block as a backing.

We saw and saw and we get this part. By the way, I remembered about the cable channel with the camera function late, so I assembled part of the frame without capturing the moments of its assembly.

We sawed it off and tried it on. Everything seems to be normal and smooth.

We insert the corner into the cable channel, drill or pick (the plastic is soft, everything is easy to pick), insert the rivets and rivet. As a result, you get such a beautiful connection.

Houston, we have problems!!! The nail of the rivet came off in the wrong place ((. Well, no problem, this can be treated with a file. It’s not for nothing that they say, after assembly, process it with a file)))

We glue on both sides.

Let's try it on. Floor tiles were used as a square.

After riveting, we get a smooth, beautiful-looking connection.

View from inside the cable channel.

The top (or bottom) part is in place.

Assembled frame.

During the manufacturing process, it was decided to add a jumper in the middle of the frame for rigidity. To do this, two T-shaped parts were cut out of fiberglass. There is no process for cutting a hole for the part, but everything is simple, we carefully cut it out with a stationery knife so that it fits through.

ATTENTION! Fingers! You can cut it into two.

The jumper is in place.

The most interesting thing begins. We need to tighten the mesh. Here my wife comes to the rescue, but she doesn’t do it herself ((. There is no stretching process, since the arms, legs and improvised objects were busy. We take the mesh with an allowance of 2-5 cm. We stretch the mesh so that there are no folds and sagging. In order for the cable channel (its upper part) did not open during operation, before snapping it into place, we drip on it every 10cm super glue and quickly put it in place.

After tensioning and assembly, we cut off the excess mesh flush with the cable channel.

View of the finished mosquito net. Next, we’ll figure out how you’ll attach it to the window. I got it like this: on top of the same fiberglass, guides (ears, spikes, call it what you want) are cut out and riveted in place on top, and something like an eccentric on the bottom. When inserting a mosquito net into the window frame, its upper guides fit between the frame and the window sash, and at the bottom we turn the eccentrics so that they also fit between the frame and the window sash. The grid is fixed, but if necessary, it can be moved left or right.

The mosquito net is in place.

An effective means of protection against mosquitoes and other small insects is a mosquito net. Can be purchased finished design, or you can make it yourself. Application modern materials allows you to make mosquito protection for a window from a mesh material that will fit snugly against window frame and have a neat appearance.

Types of protective mesh

Before starting production, you need to decide what type of mesh is needed. They differ in different parameters:

  • by type of fastening - on hooks, Velcro, pins, Z-shaped brackets;
  • by type of opening: stationary, removable, sliding, roller;
  • by the presence of a frame: on a frame (frame), frameless;
  • according to the mounting location: internal or external.

Below we will describe how to make frameless ones - stationary and removable, as well as a mosquito protection option - a mesh on a frame made of a cable channel.

How to make a budget version of frameless mesh?

The simplest option frameless mesh, made with your own hands, is stationary. The canvas is simply glued to the window frame. But since the canvas itself does not hold well, you must first sew a strip of material with good adhesion around its perimeter. It can be any fabric tape. If installed on a wooden window, the canvas can be additionally secured with buttons. The advantage of this method is maximum simplicity, the disadvantage is that the mesh cannot be opened or removed to clean it from dirt. That is, after some time it will have to be dismantled and the entire procedure performed again.

The second option is a mesh with Velcro. In order to make it yourself, you will need the following materials:

  • anti-mosquito fabric;
  • Velcro tape (Velcro, “burdock”);
  • construction adhesive.

Part of the tape is attached with construction adhesive to the inner quarter. That is, to the part of the frame to which the window sash is adjacent when closing. The second part is sewn along the perimeter of the mosquito net. Before applying the glue, the area of the frame on which the glue will be applied must be degreased and cleaned of dust. The advantages of this type of frameless mesh are that it is “reusable”; if necessary, it can be opened slightly or completely removed. In terms of cost, it also belongs to the budget option.

To attach Velcro to the frame, it is better to choose a transparent rubber adhesive, such as Tytan, which can then be easily removed without leaving any residue. This is especially important if the window is plastic - rubbing and repainting it like a wooden one will not work here.

DIY frame type design

To make a frame with your own hands you will need the following elements.

  • Rectangular cable channel (15×10 mm). The length is determined based on the outer perimeter of the frame, where the frame will be attached.
  • Metal corners (10 mm) – 4 pcs.
  • Blind rivets – 16 pcs.

The tools you will need are a metal file and a drill. First of all, the dimensions are taken - height and width. We cut 4 pieces from the cable channel at an angle of 45 degrees and fold them into a rectangle. Having placed the corners on top, you need to drill holes in the profile so that they exactly coincide with the holes in the corners. Then the structure is connected using rivets - and the frame is ready. Please note that when riveting, the riveter must be located outside the cable channel.

After the frame is ready, you need to secure the canvas in it. It is placed over the frame and snapped onto the cable channel cover. To fasten it evenly, without sagging, you need to start fastening along one of the long sides. In this case, you need to make sure that there is no distortion. Then the canvas is secured to one of the following sides of the frame.

It is better to fasten the opposite sides with an assistant, since here you will need to provide light tension. At the same time, stretching the canvas, making sure that there is no distortion and snapping the bar in place is inconvenient, so an extra pair of hands will come in handy here. Frame-type mosquito net can be attached to a window different ways. The most common is the plunger type, using Z-shaped brackets.

To avoid the strip snapping off, it is better to additionally secure it with glue. To do this, when the structure is completely ready, you need to apply a small amount of glue into the gap between the cable channel and its cover (bar).

How to choose a canvas?

The main element in any such design is the canvas. It is sold in rolls and by the metre. There are about 30 linear meters per roll. If you need to make 1-2 designs with your own hands, then it is better to buy by the meter. When comparing prices, please note: they can be indicated both per square and per linear meter. In terms of quality, the canvas differs in the following parameters:

  • cell size;
  • thickness of the canvas;
  • material;
  • strength.

  • cell size;
  • thickness of the canvas;
  • material;
  • strength.

The last indicator is important for the anti-cat grid. She can withstand the “attack” of a pet; she is not afraid of cat claws and teeth. The most successful material for making anti-cat mosquito nets is polyester with special impregnation.

If there is a cat in the house, then you can only install a frame mosquito net. When installing, you need to take care of additional fasteners - the canvas to the frame and the frame to the window frame. This is necessary so that the animal does not fly out with the net.

The cell size is selected depending on the size of the insects in a particular area and what protection is needed from. The smallest cells have a cross-section of 0.25x1 mm. They protect not only from mosquitoes, but also from small particles of sand and dust. A canvas with cells of this size will also become an obstacle for poplar fluff. To protect from raindrops, the cross-section should be no larger than 1x1 mm.

The material from which the canvas is made has great importance. It is he who is responsible for color fastness and service life. The most reliable option is fiberglass cloth with a polymer coating.

By choosing a high-quality fabric, you can make a good framed or frameless mosquito net with your own hands. It will have an aesthetic appearance and also meet all functional tasks. With it you can ventilate rooms without fear of uninvited visitors flying in: it will protect the house from mosquitoes, midges, and annoying flies.

The need to protect housing from mosquitoes is present to varying degrees in all regions of Russia. This is especially true in the spring, when the need for heating has already disappeared, and it is too early to turn on the air conditioners, and the window sashes are in the open position most of the day.

The most effective and safest mosquito protection for residents is mechanical, that is, equipping windows and, if necessary, doorways devices with mesh fabrics that prevent insects from entering the home from the street.

These devices are produced various types, differing in design, functionality and, accordingly, price.

Window openings equipped with mesh

Considering the simplicity of the technical design protective devices budget class, let's look at how to make a mosquito net yourself.

In addition to serving as a barrier to insects from the street into the home, these protective devices must trap debris and, in part, dust. To effectively cope with these tasks, mechanical means of protection against mosquitoes, commonly called mosquito nets, must have the following characteristics:

  • the functionality of the mesh canvas is to provide a barrier for insects and debris while maintaining sufficient light and air permeability, partial dust collection (especially important for lower floors);
  • environmental friendliness – absence of harmful emissions into the environment;
  • sufficient strength and resistance to weather conditions - wind, humidity, high temperature, ultraviolet rays;
  • operational safety;
  • ease of daily care;
  • aesthetics.

In some cases, this list may be supplemented with other properties, such as compactness, increased strength (“anti-catching”, anti-penetration), etc.

Manufacturing of simple protective devices

One of the two main components of mosquito protection (for sash versions) is the frame, which determines the geometry, dimensions and rigidity of the structure. The strength and durability of the protective device depends on the quality of the frame profile.

The second, no less important component of mosquito protection is a fine-mesh mesh fabric, from which the selection of materials begins, regardless of who makes the device - the home owner or an outside contractor.

Mesh Canvas Selection

Available means with similar characteristics include gauze fabric, gauze, old tulle curtains, fiberglass mesh (painting reinforcement) or fine-mesh construction steel wire.

Fine mesh fiberglass and steel woven mesh

The most environmentally friendly, but least durable of the listed materials is gauze (fine-mesh fabric made from cotton threads), which quickly becomes dirty and stretches, has a low degree of transparency, decomposes under the influence of bacteria and easily breaks under accidental load. Gauze for equipment window openings can only be used as a temporary means of protection against mosquitoes anywhere in summer kitchen or a country house.

Mosquito protection: on the left – made of tulle, on the right – made of gauze.

The remaining available materials also have individual disadvantages, but are more suitable for mosquito protection. Construction fine mesh has also proven itself well. steel mesh(woven) made of thin wire with anti-corrosion coating.

Mesh canvases, produced specifically for protection against mosquitoes, are made from fiberglass, polyester (nylon), polyester, nylon and steel thread.

The optimal choice of these materials is fiberglass - a mesh made of lightweight fiberglass coated with polyvinyl chloride (PVC), durable and non-flammable, with a high degree of transparency and resistance to all atmospheric factors.

Anti-mosquito canvases: on the left – made of fiberglass, on the right – made of polyester.

In second place in popularity after fiberglass is polyester - a strong, durable, but widely affordable material.

The mesh size of the produced mosquito net is in the range from 0.5 to 1.2 mm, and when choosing a mesh fabric, preference should be given to the material in the middle part of this range - 0.6-1.0 mm. There is also an anti-dust class canvas - a specially woven mesh fabric with rectangular cells 0.25 mm wide, which trap the smallest particles suspended in the air, and therefore require regular washing.

Installation of frameless protection

Not all mosquito repellent devices without a frame base are structurally simple and easy to install. self-production. For example, in living conditions It is difficult to produce roller shutter (roll) devices or “pleated mesh” of the required level of aesthetics and reliability, therefore protective accessories of such designs are produced in industrial conditions.

But anyone can equip a window unit with a net using simple fastenings, and this design of a mosquito repellent device is no less effective than any other device.

Mosquito net on adhesive mounting tape

For such a protective structure, a flexible mesh fabric and fittings for fixation are required - burdock tape fasteners.

Important! When making mosquito protection with Velcro tape, it is better not to use metal mesh– in the working position, such a canvas is not aesthetically pleasing due to the inevitable unevenness in the plane of the canvas, and its prickly edges must be processed after cutting.

Materials for such a device can be purchased as a set by selecting a package with the right size and color of the canvas, or buy separately, taking measurements window opening roulette.

Frameless mosquito protection: on the left – kit, on the right – retail.

If the sashes of a window unit open outward, the mesh will be located on inner surface binding. And vice versa - when the window opens inward, the protection is attached from the outside.

Remove protective polyethylene tape and glue residues from the window block. Stepping back from the inner edge of the window block box 5-15 mm outwards, along the perimeter of the profile with a simple pencil using a ruler, draw a line - the inner border of the mounting burdock tape. The surface along the line is degreased to the width of the Velcro.

Burdock tape is produced with self-adhesive, including hot-melt adhesive, back surface and without it. Therefore, Velcro is glued along the perimeter of the window block box, depending on the type of design - in accordance with the instructions for use.

Important! The hard strip of self-adhesive tape is attached to the window block, and the soft half is attached to the mesh.

Stages of installing frameless mosquito protection

IN ready-made kits The soft half of the adhesive tape is often already sewn to the mesh canvas along the perimeter, and to install the protection you only need to install the hard side of the Velcro on the window block. If there is no standard fastening, then you can do it yourself - first glue the tape to the mesh, tucking the edge of the canvas inward so that the edges do not split, and then stitch it with thread.

Standard finishing of the mesh canvas edge with mounting tape

It should be remembered that the frameless mosquito repellent device is convenient to use when it is located internally. Installation of such a mesh outside is permissible only on the lower floors accessible to service from portable ladder, or on window blocks divided into several openings vertical posts from a profile, with several movable doors.

Internal and external arrangement of flexible protection

A do-it-yourself mosquito net can be installed even easier, even without mounting tape. The perimeter of the opening in the box of the window block is measured according to sealing rubber between it and the sash, and with a margin of 10% to this value, a twisted nylon cord with a diameter of 4 mm is purchased. A mesh canvas 5 cm larger than the opening in each direction is also selected and purchased.

The sealing rubber is pryed off with a screwdriver with a narrow tip and removed from the seating groove.

Starting from the middle of the upper side, the edge of the mesh is placed on the groove overlay, on top of which the middle of the length of the cord is laid. The rope over the mesh in both directions (right and left) is pressed to the full depth into the groove, wedging and fixing the canvas in it. The mesh is installed under tension so that there is no slack left on the canvas. The two ends of the cord should meet in the middle of the bottom side of the opening, where they fit into a groove under a bead of white glue.

Installing a mosquito net in the groove for the sealing rubber

The excess fabric in the form of a strip along the cord is cut with scissors flush with the edge of the groove.

Manufacturing and installation of mosquito-proof frame doors from scrap materials

Self-assembly of a protective mesh flap from a standard profile (plastic or aluminum) does not promise significant savings, since you still have to buy the components in the store. At the same time, there is a high probability that the quality of a device assembled by yourself will be lower than that of one made by a professional.

But making a frame of good quality from cheap fittings intended for other purposes will be of interest to many.

With your own hands put together a decent frame mosquito net on plastic window can be made from plastic channels for cable routing - a material of various sizes, colors and low prices.

Samples of plastic cable channels

Important! The walls of the cable channels have a thickness less than that of the standard profile of the valves, so plunger clamps should not be attached to them - it is better to use homemade Z-brackets or corner stops made of sheet steel 0.5-0.8 mm thick.

Scroll necessary materials and tool:

  • plastic cable channel 15x10 mm or 20x10 mm with double lock in an amount equal to the perimeter of the light opening plus 10%;
  • 4 connecting angles for external joining of frame elements;

Cable channel with connecting angle

  • reinforcing corner linings made of steel, duralumin or durable plastic - to ensure rigidity of the sash in the corners;
  • mesh canvas with cell side 0.6 -1.0 mm;

Reinforcing pads and mesh fabric

  • rivets exhaust action diameter 3-5 mm with key;
  • drill with a drill bit for rivets;

Riveter with rivets

  • hacksaw for metal;
  • miter box.

Hacksaw with metal blade and miter box

Having taken the dimensions from the opening in the window block, cut blanks from the channels with covers, cutting their joints with a hacksaw at an angle of 45 0 - using a miter box. Having removed the covers from the cut elements, they are joined on a flat surface, reinforcing linings are placed inside and holes for rivets are marked. After drilling according to the marks, the linings are attached to the channels with rivets - the caps facing out.

Cutting the ends of cable channels and arranging them on a plane

To give greater rigidity to the structure, it is better to choose the lining according to the width of the channel base. If you can’t find this ready-made fitting for sale, you can make it yourself - cut it with a grinder from sheet steel 0.5-0.8 mm thick.

Reinforcing linings installed with their caps facing outwards – industrial production and homemade

The finished frame without top covers is placed on flat surface and covered with a net. This operation is best performed by three people - two hold the canvas tight, and the third installs the top covers on the frame by pressing on them until the locking profiles click.

The finished mosquito flap is applied to window block at the installation site and trace its outline with a pencil. Then Z-shaped brackets or corner stops are made independently from thin sheet steel. The second option is preferable, as it eliminates accidental movement of the sash to the side.

Sketch of the location of the corner stops on the window block frame

When installing a sash from a cable channel externally, its durability depends on the quality of the polymer. Cheap channels from exposure to ultraviolet radiation and high temperature after 2-3 years they are susceptible to cracking.

Conclusion

With your own hands conscientiously manufactured mosquito repellent The mesh for plastic windows is not inferior to industrially produced devices in performing its main function - creating a barrier for insects. As for the aesthetics of the device, this criterion depends on the skill of the performer. If to decorative design protection requirements are quite high, it is better to purchase an industrially manufactured accessory. For country houses Do-it-yourself devices would be quite appropriate.

The main point of the article

  1. Mechanical anti-mosquito devices are the safest way for humans to protect their homes from insects.
  2. Of those produced industrially Many such protective devices are technically simple and suitable for self-manufacturing.
  3. You can temporarily solve the problem of mosquito protection even without any costs - using used auxiliary materials.
  4. The relevance of using homemade mosquito protection depends on the requirements for the aesthetics of housing, since the effectiveness of such devices is quite high.

Annoying insects make it difficult to live and sleep peacefully at night in warm time of the year. They fly into the house through open windows. Despite the presence large quantity special sprays and electric mosquito catchers, only a mosquito net can significantly reduce the number of insects. Today, when replacing windows, you can additionally order this element, which costs money. How to solve the problem on a budget? In fact, everything is very simple, since a mosquito net can be assembled with your own hands very quickly from available materials.

Safety nets

Before you go to the hardware store for all the necessary components, you should decide on the type of mesh. They all differ in different parameters:

  1. By type of fastening: hooks, Velcro, pins and Z-shaped brackets.
  2. By type of opening: stationary, removable, sliding and roller.
  3. According to the presence of a frame: framed and frameless.
  4. Attachment location: internal and external.

Each of the listed types has its own advantages and features, but also disadvantages. All this is important to take into account in order to do right choice and don't waste your money. Particular attention is paid to the method of fastening, so let’s figure it out: what are the pros and cons?

  1. The frame is very rigid, because it is made of metal with a mesh fabric. Can be installed on both plastic and wooden windows from any side.
  2. The sliding mount is only suitable for aluminum windows, since sliding sashes will be used.
  3. Magnetic mosquito net is very current option for those who want to quickly get rid of insects. It is attached to both windows and doors. In the latter case, you don’t have to worry about cross-country ability, since the curtains easily open and close instantly.
  4. Rolled mesh will allow you to conduct effective fight with mosquitoes. The material is easily rolled up and unfolded from a cassette placed above the window.
  5. Simple Velcro is also easy to attach and remove. In this case, the mesh can be washed in the washing machine at any time.

Mosquito nets are installed not only on windows, but also on doors, since mosquitoes and midges also penetrate through them.

Selecting a canvas

The main element of any mosquito net is the canvas. You can buy it at any hardware store per meter or in a roll (approximately 30 m). If you only need to make a couple of grids, then it’s better not to spend money and buy required amount meters. For a larger number of protective nets, it is worth comparing prices: they may differ per square and per linear meter.

If we talk about quality, it is important to take into account several parameters:

  • cell size;
  • thickness of the canvas;
  • material type;
  • strength.

To create an anti-cat mesh, the strength parameter is very important, since it must withstand all “attacks” of domestic animals. The most ideal option For this purpose, polyester with special impregnation will be used. Additional fasteners are also required. It is especially important to install such mosquito nets on the balcony.

When determining the mesh size, you should take into account the size of the insects in the area from which additional protection is required. Minimum size cross-section is 0.25×1 mm. Such a net can become a reliable protector not only from mosquitoes and flies, but even from sand, poplar fluff and dust. To protect windows and the room from rain, experts recommend a section of 1×1 mm.

Having decided on the materials and made the necessary purchases, you can begin production. How to make a mosquito net for a framed or frameless window yourself will be discussed below. The protection will be the same functional as from production.

The quality of the protective mesh will be determined by the material from which it is made. Recently, polymer-coated fiberglass has become the most popular.

Manufacturing of frameless mesh

This is the simplest and a budget option, which will allow you to make a removable mosquito net for little money. The easiest way to make the protection stationary is to simply glue the canvas to the window frame. To make it better fixed at the edges, sew a tape of material with high adhesion properties. When it comes to wooden windows, then ordinary push pins can serve as additional fasteners. There is one significant drawback here - such a mesh cannot be removed for washing.

It's better to put in a little more money and effort to get universal protection. We are talking about a mesh with Velcro. To make it yourself, you will need the following materials:

  • anti-mosquito material according to the size of the window;
  • Velcro tape (burdock - one side with pile, the other with hooks);
  • construction adhesive.

Measurements are taken along the inner (opening) part of the window with a margin of 1 cm on each side. This size is necessary to fix the future mosquito net. One part of the adhesive tape is secured around the perimeter of the window using construction adhesive (for example, Titan) or simple double-sided tape. The second is sewn along the entire perimeter of the mesh. When everything is ready and the glue has completely dried, you can fix the protective sheet.

The entire work process takes a maximum of 2 hours, and as a result everyone receives reliable protection from insects.

Before gluing the Velcro to the plastic, it should be thoroughly washed and degreased with alcohol.

Manufacturing of frame type mesh

Unlike previous method it is somewhat more complicated, but still anyone can handle it. It should be noted that such option will do and for making a mosquito net for the door. So, to install the frame with your own hands you will need the following components:

  • cable channel of rectangular cross-section 15×10 cm (the length is determined independently based on the external parameters of the frame where the frame will be fixed);
  • metal corners 10 mm – 4 pcs.;
  • blind rivets – 16 pcs.;
  • thin nylon mesh;
  • construction adhesive.

Tools:

  • whetstone;
  • pencil;
  • scissors;
  • roulette.

Let's move on to the construction of the structure:

  1. We take measurements outside window opening. Based on the data obtained, a frame will be made.
  2. Celebrating on plastic box length and width.
  3. Using a knife, cut the vertical and horizontal parts at an angle of 45°. The cut areas are carefully polished with a sharpening stone.
  4. We assemble the structure: we fix the corners with special connecting rods metal corners with rivets (nuts and screws will also work).
  5. We apply a mosquito net with an allowance of 2 cm on each side.
  6. In the upper part we clamp the canvas with the cover of the plastic cable channel. During the snapping process, we change the long and short sides. For reliability, we glue some places with glue.
  7. We cut off the excess fabric with scissors.

The finished mosquito net is installed in the window opening using Z-shaped brackets.

And this is how a mesh is assembled from a special profile:

Restoration of mosquito nets

An equally important process is restoration, which includes the following main stages:

  • Removing the frame from the brackets.
  • Cleaning from dust and dirt.
  • Removing damaged nylon.
  • Installation of the repaired mesh in the window opening.

Before replacing any element in the structure, you need to pay attention to how it is fixed and whether it can be removed. Most of the elements on the mosquito net from the manufacturer are fixed with a special sealing cord. If you carefully remove it, the holders can be easily removed.

All renovation work carried out very carefully. It is important to remember that you are working with a fragile structure.

As you can see, in order to make a mosquito net with your own hands, you will have to spend 2 or even 3 times less than when ordering a similar design from the manufacturer. In addition, the installation process is quite simple and does not require special knowledge or equipment.
